Using a hank on jib with a roller furling system

Hello all, I bought a Morgan OI 37 with a roller furler system. I was wondering how to use an emergency hank on jib with a furler. I am not sure about the shape of the furler and it is half way around the world. I wanted to have a backup. This boat has a bow sprit so I could just use a baby stay I think it would be called. What about turning it into a cutter with something more permanent?

Easy. Make a series of small 3-4 inch diameter strops out of strong cord. Simple knot will do. Wrap the strop around your furler extrusion and join the two loops in the hank. Raise the sail. Voila

Re: Using a hank on jib with a roller furling system

I started looking into a slutter and solent rig. This looks promising. I think I prefer the slutter over the solent. I am also thinking of just switching over to hank on for both. This is what I am used to and I have no problems with it. With the Slutter I would just have two bags up front instead of one. With the Solent I would have one bag and just hank on the smaller jib when needed.

Re: Using a hank on jib with a roller furling system

I can see several methods.
A. Sew a short piece of webbing to the luff of the sail with a button snap on the end. Webbing wraps around the foil and snaps into the receiving snap affixed to other side of sail. My boat uses this regather than hanks.
B. Grommets thru luff of sail. Lines with tied knots as above or with a loop at one end and a toggle at the other.

If I had a boat with a furler I would use one of these methods on all the furler sails so they would be restrained aboard as they are dropped in heavy weather.

I used a hank on jib on a furler.. remove the hanks and replace with bayonet slides.. Simple.
Opps... Seems they are also referred to as Slug slides.

That’s pretty smart

Do they not get caught in the slot when raising and lowering?

Nope, just feed them in as they reach the slot, obviously if solo one needs a halyard long enough to go round the mast winch and to the bow but it works and is a cheap way to utilise any hank on head sails you can get hold of.

"emergency hank on jib"? My storm jib has extra large hanks that wrap around the furler (and possibly a furled jib).

Not sure what you mean but assume you are talking about how to rig a storm jib on a roller reefing system? The main point is that you are likely to be doing this in strong winds so not the best time to drop your big genoa off the forestay & pack it away - best leave it rolled up.
There are different ways to solve the issue, for instance the Gale Sail is one way of doing it: https://atninc.com/atn-gale-sail-sai...quipment.shtml

Personally I went for the detachable forestay option using a hanked on storm jib. I installed a big U bolt just aft of the forestay, large backing plate below deck & strongly reinforced the hull/deck join in that area (still think I should run a short cable below decks from the eye nuts on the U bolts down to the stem but havent done that yet). The detachable forestay has a large adjustable highfield lever on the deck end. I use the spare jib halyard - that is led down from the masthead sheave through a hook-in Selden mast fitting to keep it clear from the roller swivel - to raise the sail.

Only used once for real but worked well crossing Biscay. Normally the detachable forestay lives wrapped around the masthead shroud with a hook on the spreader to stop it banging - the highfield lever sits neatly along the deck.

That is a good alternative. Also it is not a bad idea to have something similar that you can hoist over the furler without the storm sail just to protect the furling sail from coming unfurled while at anchor.

Re: Using a hank on jib with a roller furling system

Are you talking about leaving the sail furled and then raise a jib or pulling the furled jib off the furler and then hanking on?

My boat actually came with something ancient that I have not tried putting to use, a storm trysail that goes up the mast with loops of rope that have little wooden rollers on them to allow the loops to slide up (as far as the spreaders) without hanging up. I wonder if you were thinking of something like that going up the furled sail?
You can also fly a jib that is not hanked on, you just can't point as high, and you'll need a separate halyard, like a spinnaker halyard, to raise it.

I wonder if that opening is big enough on those slugs for the hanks to slip through too, in case you don't want to remove the hanks?

Totally leaning towards the Slutter method with a detachable stay out of dyneema

The solent and slutter has the advantage of not requiring running back stays.
