Perkins should be good for 8000 hrs before any interest in further surgery is required

has the hull been sprayed?

Love the safe and practical galley layout. Looks like a well thought out boat.

Looks great! Very nice work on the interior.

How does it do off the wind with the Cape Horn wind vane?

Save for an inconvenient water pump">raw water pump location, we've been happy with the switch. No oil leaks and the bilge is pristine. Enjoy your beautiful boat!
Thanks! Hopefully I won't have to make that choice anytime soon, but will consider a Yanmar if it comes down to it. Appreciate the response.

The boat saw a pretty thorough refit approx 7 years ago. I believe the hull was painted blue then. Trying to get more info from past owners.

Thanks! We've owned her all of 3 weeks, so haven't yet used the wind vane. Doesn't seem to be a lot of opportunity in coastal Pacific Northwest... might need to plan a longer cruise to find out!

Agreed. The one with the snow capped mountain in the background. Whoever took it deserves a beer!

Great boat.

I sailed a Cal40 many years ago. They made nice boats.

Wow! I was thinking about a Cal 39 that was for sale in Seattle last fall. Wonder if it was this one? I settled on a '82 Tartan 37 cb that was well loved. No regrets. Enjoy her.

Great boat!

Im partial to Cal39s as it was the first sailboat I was on and the one on which I caught the sailing bug.

The one I was on was 10 years old at the time but nowhere near as well loved as yours (it was a sailing club boat). But still tough and stiff.

PS If and when comes the need to repower I'd suggest going with Beta. Very user friendly motor and parts are less $ as many/most can be obtained from Kubota dealers.

Re: Most Beautiful Cal 39 Mark II

What a gorgeous boat! I fell in love with the looks of the Cal 39 some years ago after seeing one in Port Ludlow. There are several for a sale now in the Seattle area. I may have to go look! Not to be a 'Debby downer', but wonder if anyone can share what might be a 'weak link' in this design? I know that even the well loved Cal 40 isn't perfect for all situations. Every boat has one or more weaknesses...just wondering what it might be with these gorgeous Cal 39s. The upside seems pretty obvious!

S/V AIOLOS is a 1978 Cal 39 Mark II Tall Rig, with extensive updates. The PO's loved her well.
  • Redone interior with birds-eye maple and teak
  • New Shatauer sails (7 of them)
  • Watermaker + solar + windvane
  • Tecma head
  • New Iverson dodger and full Iverson cockpit enclosure, plus custom winter cover
  • Standing rigging, wiring, systems all updated within last 7 years.
  • Etc etc etc
The only ambiguity is the original Perkins 4108. Engine hour meter stopped at 1800 hours (6-7 years ago?), but she had a recent top-end rebuild and we'll milk it as long as we can.

Berthed in Seattle, we have years of PNW sailing ahead. No offshore plans... yet.

She sails beautifully, and is a dream come true for us. Look forward to posting/learning from the forum as we go. A few photos:

Cheers,
Does it have the metal "beam" mast support that has been a problem on some models?

I'd have a hard time going to work anytime the wind got above 5. She is a beauty.
