Sadly only one way to tell for absolute sure.

Or find the outside leak and open that hole enough to see inside or probe with a wire or something similar.

It makes more sense it is just a SS top plate. If it is 2 welds that will be much more complicated and take much more time.

Re: Danish Rose 39 owners

Everyone so far is guessing there is a hole in the steel hull and then a hole into the stainless steel tank.

I wonder if it might be something completely different.

Could seawater by first going into the engine then following the fuel lines back to the tank?

This might be a case of closing/replacing the raw water supply valve to the engine.

I also found a thread on a different website where seawater was coming into the fuel tank from a tank vent line. Do some vessels have a vent line that exhausts out the side of the vessel?

Re: Danish Rose 39 owners

OK and good in you for finding it.

I find it strange is rotted out like that, no clue why the weld material went. Unless whoever did the weld picked up the wrong rod?

That is gonna be a mess to try to do on the beach. Every tide it will fill and then be very tough to weld up correctly. I hope you have hauled her out.

It will also be interesting (for me) to know if it was just that one strip of welding or if there are other areas. You will also need to check the weld in you ballast sections. Bad welds there would be another matter.

Re: Danish Rose 39 owners

Marcio,

You should be able to place pics directly into a post now.
Below click GO ADVANCED
Then in ADDITIONAL OPTIONS in the second box click MANAGE ATTACHMENTS
THEN you will be able select images to load.

That in not a lot of skin fittings for a boat this size. We have:
1 fwd head intake water
2 fwd head discharge
3 sounder
4 speed sensor
5 galley intake water
6 galley discharge
7 engine intake water
8 aft head intake water
9 aft head discharge

Add an AC unit and I too would have 11.

Has salt water gotten into your ballast sections?

Re: Danish Rose 39 owners

Marcio,

Most likely it is down in the keel. I am assuming tou have the bot hauled out in a yard somewhere.

First is to do a visual inspection of the bilge area and identify any tanks you have.

You know you have a fuel tank so stick some wire in there and try to feel how far forward and aft you can go. Are your water tanks in the bilge? Do the same for them. Then work forward and aft from there looking for other spaces. The top of the ballast section may be open or it may have a welded top.

With the boat out of the water take a small hammer or such and tap on the hull where the fuel tank is. Now go forward until you hear a distinct change. Mark that. Mark that line. You should be able to pretty clearly identify where the tanks are and where the ballast is.

Given the right atmospherics and tanks dry you will sometimes find the keel wet or damp where the ballast is. Then you can just see it.

I had to do this with my boat. You can get very accurate.

Re: Danish Rose 39 owners

I am pretty sure that Marcio's vessel is resting on the beach and part buried in the sand. He appears to be looking for leaks preventing it from refloating.

Study his links at:
https://imgur.com/a/f1cDjzV

https://imgur.com/a/SpxpyMw

Also note that he reports water fills the fuel tank when the tide goes up. The only way that could occur is if the vessel isn't floating.

Marcio, can you confirm for us that your vessel is 1/2 buried in the sand? If it is, how long as it been there?

Regarding your question could diesel inside the vessel would have damaged the weld...No it would not.

Maybe the weld broke when the vessel was dropped hard onto the beach. Alternately, the weld rusted away after the paint that protected it from the seawater was gone.

It may be difficult to weld so close to the water and you might want to get the boat into a drydock to get the weld repaired.

A temporary solution to making the vessel water tight could be to use waterproof butyl tape. You should be able to get some mail order or locally from supplier that fixes duct work. It has a black gloo on back of the tape that would stick well to dry metal.

The same tape could also cover the holes in the boat to help keep water out while you try and get it refloated.

Re: Danish Rose 39 owners

Marcio,
Your vessel is known as a full keel vessel. Your photo
located at https://imgur.com/a/f1cDjzV shows about 1/2 of the keel above the level of the sand.

About 1/2 of the keel is located below the sand. The keel is where all the lead is located.

I found two pictures of a Danish Rose on the hard so you get an idea how much of the keel is buried in the sand.

Re: Danish Rose 39 owners

Latter pics/video SEEM to show the boat up off he sand, IF I understand it correctly.
See post 34.

But no matter, you are right he needs to put the boat in a yard. The sooner the better. This will only get worse.

What I think I saw was a gap between the shoe and the keel plating. It was not obvious to me that failure was limited to the tank area, could have been in a ballast section also.

Good for you. Lots of ingenuity and will power there.

Thank you for the update.

You live in an interesting place. Where is this?

Our English steel boat has fittings for legs. But do not have the legs.
