Boats with Shallow Draft for Florida, Bahamas, Chesapeake

On Freedom 33's, not to knock them, I LUV the design. But I've personally know of several which have lost their foremast in very benign conditions. Meaning that in 10-15kts the mast simply shattered when they were sailing in small waves. Much to the surprise of everyone. And from the pieces that were left, it wasn't blindingly apparent as to why the mast had failed so catestrophically, especially under so little stress.

So with all boats that have these masts, I caution folks to ensure that they study up on them, & the requisite/required "fixes" to them. Such as are necessitated at the deck collars on most of them by this point in their lives. And to ensure that the fixes have either been done, or to do them. Not that such maint. is complex, or expensive. And most of what needs doing has long since been determined.

The one other drawback to their carbon masts. If you get hit by a bolt from Thor, good luck replacing them. Since TPI no longer exists. Otherwise I'd have one in a hot second. It's just that long distance cruisers seem to have a propensity for acting as the earth ground component of lightning strikes a bit too often for my taste. Thus the comment.


PS: Check those hull cores (balsa).

PS: Check those hull cores (balsa).

I think I'd replace the crazy expensive carbon fiber masts with aluminum in the event of a failure. The Beachcomber's freestanding masts were actually made by a flagpole company in Tampa from what I remember. Nonsuch also used aluminum so it works.

I found a very interesting review article about this design written by Naval Architect Chuck Paine (the designer). In the illustrated article, he mentioned several insights he had after designing this boat. He mentions the favorable design characteristics of Sharpie and Catboat designs that influenced this design. He also wrote that he learned more from THIS design than any others he designed. He also wrote about what he sees as the shortcomings of this particular design. I found his article interesting to read and learned some things from it. Steady NOTES: I am posting this listing because this is the first of this model of boat that I have enjoyed seeing. Because it is a popular brand, I looked for a good example to illustrate this thread. I think this particular boat is an outstanding example to use as an illustration. Why? Because this boat has been completely refinished, and from the photos it appears like new. Take a look.

For someone looking for a very nice condition boat, at a lower price point, this may be a good choice. But, as with any boat, Caveat Emptor. I have NO connection to the boat or seller. Our Catalina 34s came with a fin keel of 5'-7" draft and a wing keel of 4'-3". Most folks I know of from Florida have opted for the wing keel for where they sail. However, the fin keel is less than your six foot maximum. Horses for courses, and the reliable feedback from reading these posts that prompted your thread, a great idea BTW, is that even over six foot is "doable" but may, I say may, lead to anchoring further out, and perhaps bumping the bottom, certainly in Florida.

The only thing I see I don't like is the access to the engine and battery bank. As shown in the photo, it appears like the engine is hard to access. Perhaps a CF member can comment on that, if they own one or owned one of this model.

I understand. But I am on a ROLL!

I have recently found several boats that, to me, look very clean and very good for the criteria I have for these threads (some of the boats cross over and are posted in two threads in which they fit the criteria).

I have seen some surprising deals. Some have opened my eyes up to new possibilities for me to consider for myself too. Some "sweet" looking boats. I sure wish I could have more than one!

If Karma exists, I am hoping that by sharing these boats here, someone else may benefit from the exposure to them. I could use some Good Karma when I look for my own boat.
