Kirk, I hope Beth did a good job It's a hard place to describe and even the slides don't really capture the feeling very well. There is a stark brutal wilderness beauty that is hard to explain - and that is not everyone's cup of tea.

Rolf Bjelke and Deborah Shapiro on Northern Light [authors of Time on Ice] are currently running a series of articles in Cruising World about their 22K mile circumnavigation of Antartica,you might find this of interest, regards, Bruce.

There is a Sailing Directions publication on Antarctica. Get it read it.

"... Commonwealth Bay (67˚01'S., 142˚40'E.), 27 miles wide, lies W of Cape Gray and recedes for about 12 miles. The E side of this bay is obstructed by many islets which lie up to 2 miles offshore. The Hannam Islands lie about 2 miles offshore, 7 miles W Cape Gray. Whetter Nunatak, a conspicuous rocky outcrop, juts through the ice cliffs, 3.5 miles S of these islands. The Laseron Islands, a small group, lie on the SE side of the bay. The Mackellar Islands lie in the center of the bay and about 1.5 miles from the head. This group consists of about 30 rocks and small islands which extend over an area, about 2 miles long and 1 mile wide. The largest island in the group is about 0.5 mile long and is the site of a large penguin rookery. Several reefs and shoals lie in the vicinity of these islands and they should be approached with care."

Note the words 'ice cliffs'.

As it happens I'm going down there this winter (their summer) just posted a photo of conditions last theirsummer at the American base. When I return I'll add some happy feet photos etc and a few comments, look for it in April or late March. Also read Blue Water by Bob Griffith who went their by sail on Awahnee II.

It's your dream....why not follow it?

I just got back to check this thread, didn't realize it had gotten so many great replies! A lot of very useful links you guys have posted, thank you! I'll work my way through them.

The research station at Commonwealth Bay, I believe is where the 2 French filmmakers were stationed during the filming for the movie "March Of The Penguins", staring the very admirable Emperor Penguins. The behind the scenes footage on the DVD is longer than the movie itself, which is great. It gives a very good idea about the conditions down there. The window to bring in supplies and ships is narrow, and once the waters ice up, they're alone for most of the year. Very inhospitable. I can understand why it's not a very welcoming place for just anyone. But it sure is one beautiful place.
