What's the deal with Marina's in Monterey Bay, CA?

I call the Moss Landing marina and they tell me they have no slips and no waiting list either. I drove by today and walked in, they tell me they have no slips. but there's a waiting list. I said I have a 41 foot boat and he said, oh we have slips that big just not today. So say ok great, I informed him I hadn't bought the boat yet but was planning on doing it in the next month, he wanted nothing to do with me after that. So he says you need to have a boat before you rent a slip, so if I buy this boat and I sail to that marina and they tell me they don't have any slips then wtf do i do?

are all marinas like this? I can probably find a slip in SF Bay but I'd like to rent the slip BEFORE i sail the boat up there so I'm not wandering around aimlessly for weeks on my boat.

It’s not secrecy and games, it’s just not supplying confusing information to drones. Keep it simplex

I need a slip for a 41’ boat..........

Yes please I’d like to be on the list......

Sure I’ll pay today for the slip, it’ll be later this month before I can get the boat here though......

Basically no one is going to reserve a slip for you unless you start paying the rent for it straight away.. slips need to be earning money not sitting empty waiting for 'maybe's'..

so that part makes sense. but why do i have to lie to get what i want? if i don't have a boat, what does he care if i rent a slip.

He might be "vetting" you to ensure that you don't bring a derelict boat in. But I agree with the above, if there is a slip available, and you are willing to start paying immediately, he should rent you the slip.

Same as in florida. most people think they are a customer at the marina when they come in to rent a slip. truth is a fully occupied marina can pick and choose who they want as tenants and they want the least amount of hassle. We ran a waiting list and it was a complete pain in the ass to try to manage

Marinas are there to enable access to the sea. If you don't own a boat then there is no need for you take up this scarce resource, even if you have the money. This marina is a public, city owned marina.
You seem a bit new to boat owning. A typical way is to purchase your boat and move it to a transient berth or a sublease. You may have to make multiple moves over the months. Then work to getting a premenant slip where you want it.

Meantime, fill out the downloadable Monterry Bay Marina waitlist here and pay the fees.

so yeah he says "salmon fisherman got all the 41 foot slips" and that's when I casually mentioned I wasn't sure on the size yet because I hadn't bought the boat yet. Right away he changed his tune and told me I needed a boat before buying a slip.

Sorry, I confused the marina you wanted into. Do you expect that Moss Landing is so far away from Monterry that the waitlist will be much shorter?

yeah. Moss Landing is rather dirty with the smoke stacks. Most people don't want to keep their boats there so it usually has openings.

I called a year ago and they told me the waitlist was usually a month or two.
