Well, as long as you have a rational and realistic plan. With critical thinking skills like that, you'll be fine.

It was an improbable scenario, so I provided a like answer. Seriously, do you think extreme 'prepping' would seriously mitigate the turmoil that Venezuela has been going through?

it is not an impossible scenario . People are actually living it in many places on the planet.
it would go a long way towards mitigating the worst of the effects for my immediate family yes.

( those that forget the past are doomed to repeat it.)

Sketch it out for us. You're a Mormon in Caracas, you and your family have a year's stockpile... start from there:

There is nothing wrong with hoping that bad things don't happen. But, don' t try and call that a plan.

Your turn. What would you do?
That's really funny, considering how Venezuela didn't need any real help destabilizing their own government. Socialism always works great until you run out of other people's money.

that's actually quite easy . We have a rather large presence in Caracas.
https://www.mormonnewsroom.org/facts...ntry/venezuela
About 170,000 members with another 4 million throughout south America.
Your turn and keep it real ( in other words something you can actually do now.)

Don't look now, but I think you've just agreed with me - that real prepping isn't the food and weapons you saved in your basement, but the relationships you have, the group(s) you belong to, the connections you've made. The Church of the LDS is a pretty good organization to be part of in a time of crisis. And they're pretty helpful to others too, in my experience.

you have to be able to take care of yourself and your own family before you can even think of helping anyone else . There are many who don't plan and expect you to give to everything to them your family be damned. There in like the rub and need to defend yourselves.

Re: Prepping?

Ok, Im the OP so Ill step back in here.

We (humans) are tribal by nature. As cruisers are we a tribe? Id say yes.

If times got tough would we behave as such? Id say yes.

Good community to belong to :-) Relationships do matter, especially then.

Thank you. Tribal is kind of a dirty word these days, but i get where you're going with it.

I've agreed (several times) that it's more than sensible to make preparations to be able to independently ride out disruptions, crises, etc. But that will only be a piece of what ultimately leads to survival of something really catastrophic. A basement full of guns and MREs will never be enough.

I hope you're right about the cruisers 'pull-together' thing... it would be an extension of the human capacity to cooperate. (I also worry about a new world made mainly of old white boat owners... . Eh, not today's problem)

Is it unreasonable to also suggest that if some people spent less time thinking up and preparing for SHTF scenarios, and more time trying to keep S away from the F, that they might worry less about the apocalypse?

And there are people who participate in their society, belong to or support aid organizations, and don't spend ridiculous amounts of time thinking up implausible civilization-ending scenarios. That's prevention.

You already know that 1 year cache or not, your protection and survival will mainly come from your church membership and working together with them, not your stockpile.

Re: Prepping?

“... The United States has allowed the manufacturing of most of its drugs and medical devices to drift offshore, at the end of long, thin supply chains ...
... The last US factory making penicillin closed in 2004, he found. Only 10 percent of the generic drugs used in this country are made here. Four-fifths of the active ingredients in American pharmaceuticals come from somewhere else, mostly India and China. If anything disrupted delivery of a critically needed drug—a process line collapsing in a factory, a typhoon fouling the path of container ships—supplies would run short, the manufacturer would be far out of US jurisdiction, and there would be no domestic alternative ...”

that would be nice but after services today I am instead building a new high tunnel greenhouse so I can grow more food for my family.
It is a proven fact that when food supplies get low for extended periods people ( when desperate to feed their own ) do desperate things.

Did you manufacture that greenhouse on your property? What will you do when a storm destroys it?

Nuts, now theres no one to make a new one. Too bad you spent all your efforts hoarding ephemeral toys rather than maintaining a functioning society.
