Re: How much say do women really have
Slow clap for robert sailor. A few ladies present who have 3 or 4 posts in the last 7 years have blown the dust off of their keyboards in response to this thread.
My wife and I agreed on our last boat; a mono with a pilot house for all the aforementioned reasons (view from galley, lots of natural light, spacious interior). After the separation I agreed with myself on the next boat. Much more fitting for the cliché of the divorced, bitter, misogynist old drunk, drifting off to sea.
Hey, I should grow a beard and stop washing my t-shirts!

Re: How much say do women really have
Wow... I'm starting to feel rather sad after catching up on this thread. Seems to me this discussion is more about how to live as a couple than who gets to choose the boat. Thankfully, there are plenty of posts (from both sexes) who understand that marriage is a partnership.
I suspect that those who don't understand this soon find themselves sailing alone.

Of course those of us who have been on CF a while already knew there were couples on boats, and single people who used a boat as a reason to be so.

Re: How much say do women really have
There are a lot of available boats out there and even more women.
Decide what your priorities are and go with them.
As a survivor of two divorces I have learned a few things. One is it is not worth it to waste your life with someone who refuses to work with you on life. Negotiation is fine but demands are best answered with a turned back. This goes for both genders.
I have paid for my current boat and will be paying for my next boat so I am making the decision.
Of course I will listen to her input and give it appropriate consideration but the final decision is mine.

Re: How much say do women really have
I remember being on the beach with my "not yet" wife in 1969 with a list of boat design layouts. We sketched out cabin layouts in the sand and looked at their potential. At this time we thought that a 40' boat would be the lower limit for acceptable size. In 1971, after we were married and making some money, we moved into half of a small trailer,- so old that it was two-tone rustoleum with fins! From this home we found the move to our first liveaboard was an easy fit at 30'.
I do recall that we were looking at a 35' that was above our price range and we settled for the less expensive 30' boat, but we had no problem adapting to the space.

Re: How much say do women really have
Lmao at this thread. Fortunately/unfortunately (depending how u look at it!!) I am single. Years ago I was told by a G/F that it was her or my bike.....I didn't even miss her!! I am about to buy a boat and the same rule would apply, but quite simply if I meet a woman who was into boats, then I would move heaven & earth for her.
In the meantime, the only Biatch in my life, is my Cattle dog!
Cheers, Tex.

Ha Ha ! It reminds me of the old joke as to what Hurricanes and Women have in common?
When they come they are wild and wet and when they leave you loose your house, your boat and your car.

Re: How much say do women really have
I sailed for 6 years with my wife. She got scared once when I got knocked out and my vision was impaired for a couple days. That scared her and she didn't want to go off shore or out of sight of land any more. I didn't want to give up the sea and we had long discussions over that. I love my wife and couldn't imagine life without her. We sold the boat and bought an RV and traveled.
I live life without her today, as she passed away a few years ago. But I would not have made a different decision, in hindsight. The love of and for someone is what makes life fulfilling, everything else is just part of the tapestry.
PEACE LUV & HAPPINESS

Re: How much say do women really have
Hah! I am reminded of my all time favorite classified ad, seen in the Sunday LA Times many years ago:
Wife says my XKE goes or she goes. 5,0000$, take your pick!
Wonder how that turned out!

Re: How much say do women really have
First time we went cruising was on a 37' mono. Great boat, but extra cabin got loaded with cruising crap so no room for guests. Wife wanted a boat that could accommodate guests, I didn't want deeper draft so we went cat shopping.
When people ask why I bought the current boat they are expecting a technical answer, but the reasons are non-technical: wife liked it and the price was right. ;-) Fortunately it turned out to be a good boat too.

Well, I suppose if you have to!
I am firmly a multi-hull supporter but if it comes to comparing the best looking cat to the best looking monohull, in my eyes the half-aboat would win every time.

My first multihull charter, a 47' R&C boat in Tortola, was chosen PURELY to make my family happy with sailing - and they loved it. I figured we'd get them interested in sailing, and then move on to "real boats"
The problem? I quickly became a believer myself. Now, I can't imagine living on one of those small, slow monohulls and spending half my life at a 30 degree angle.
Next year we take delivery on our Antares 44i in Argentina, and will sail it to the Med. And until you asked the question, I had entirely forgotten that I had ever thought any other way about catamarans!

Well done, fair winds & good luck with an excellent boat.
