Re: deep doo doo....boat is grounded....

Most industrial gas suppliers hire out cyls of compressed air, CO2 etc. In Australia an E size (about 2' 8" high contains approx 120 cu ft. just attach a hose and away you go, be careful to open valve slowly, the pressure is 2500psi !

Kewl car, brings back memories

WRT raising with drums. Tips: frame them in 2by to make easier to handle and fasten to the boat. Sink and displace with compressor air by running air in low bung allowing water to flow out of upper, be ready to close once displaced.

There’s a couple other pics there of us raising a completely sunken sailboat

Re: deep doo doo....boat is grounded....

Did you go to Katlynn and ask them to pull you? I’m here and spoke with Grant he said they’d pull you but he knows nothing of your call. All depends on who you talk to.

Jenny Lee is the only person I've talked to at Katlyn. I don't think I know Grant unless he's the guy with the yellow sailboat. He helped me get my boat to Fowler's. I'm going to be at my boat and at Katlynn's tomorrow making sure the situation hasn't got worse.

Re: deep doo doo....boat is grounded....

Loosen the boom until it is at 90 degrees to your boat. Ask some friends to sit or hang on to your boom so that the weight on the boom will bring that side down and your keel will go up and clear of the mud. Run the your engine or pull your boat for the 200ft.
Yes this sounds crazy but, that’s how grounded boats are moved.

"Changes in water levels of the Great Lakes from diversions and control works require a significant amount of time to take effect due to the amount of surface area of this lake system. On the upper lakes, it takes approximately three and one half years for one-half of the anticipated result to occur. The full effect of change could take between twelve and fifteen years." No, the dam at Iroquois has had gates closed for about week. Helped a bit. The marina in Iroquois has been hauling big boats frantically all weekend...

Areas right near the dams change much more significantly and quickly than areas further upstream. Lake Ontario itself is still dropping steadily even with the temporary flow reduction (which does help on some areas of the St. Lawrence).

Re: deep doo doo....boat is grounded....

Naval salvage operations quite frequently use tugboats anchored and winchs to haul off grounded vessels. A good danforth style anchor set from a small boat can be effective using your own winches. I have hauled my boat off of a grounding several times using this method even alternating winches on a bridle to change direction. If you have never run aground you have missed some nice places to cruise

Re: deep doo doo....boat is grounded....

Assume you have also already removed anything that isn’t bolted down to lighten the boat?
This is the first thing you should do.
Also a neighbour got his boat stuck on a river bank. - inflated the dingy underneath. If you have a couple of sacrificial dingys to use as airbags.
The thought about forcing it to heel, with weights how it’s normally done from the mast to go under a bridge, but in your case the weight wouldn’t help even if you loaded on deck. Weight is going to count against you.
Maybe one sided air bag may also force a heel.

A search of Marine Salvage Flotation Bags kicked back several, including ones that rent them.

Re: deep doo doo....boat is grounded....

Find a friend with a ski boat or equivalent then try a pull. You might be surprised on how easy it moves with an easy pull. If an easy pull doesn't move the boat (resist the temptation to use high power), try plan B. Since you have a fin keel, you may have more success pulling from the bottom of the keel. This will alter the center of force (pull point) which will point the keel slightly upward to create less resistance in breaking free of the mud. At this time of the year, you may need a wet-suit to allow you to tolerate the water temp while attaching the line to the bottom of the keel. More power can usually be safely applied at this attachment point. A second line may be required from the tow boat to the bow of your boat to prevent your boat from making an immediate 90 degree turn when it breaks free. Increase power gradually and go slowly. This technique might save you the $1,500 tow bill. It isn't magic but sometimes just a little advantage can be the difference between success and failure.

Re: deep doo doo....boat is grounded....

It's easier to power through mud in reverse because the prop wash scours the bottom around the keel. Rapid shifts of helm can help the keel plow.

Have you emptied tanks, removed heavy objects from the boat? Depending on load you might buy yourself a couple inches to work with.
