Re: Buy In Australia

There was a Westsail 32 not 33, can't imagine what that's all about. Lots of the 32's circumnavigated: it was what they were built for, the storage was way better than most other American yachts of that size. They were slow, but comfy, heavy boats. Some were home fit-out, so interiors vary.

If the one in WA is not trashed, she could do you very well. People used to joke about them, calling them "wet snail", but, it's a lot bigger than a Top Hat, which would also serve well, as would an H-28. The smaller you can go with, all your operating costs will be less.

[I know we have a big boat, but we do not think only big boats are capable of marvelous passages, have known too many small, even tiny (21 ft) that have circumnavigated. When you evaluate posts for applicability to you, if you want a smaller boat, beware of the 50 plus footers that tell you that you need more, or they are unavailable. You need what you need, and for humans, that really isn't too much. Keeping it simple and small ultimately means you have more time for play, and will trade off some comfort -- which you won't miss 'cause you won't be giving it up after having had it.]

If you like the boat you will probably get a serious bargain. It's in Freemantle. The WA economy is totally dead right now. Everything in WA is cheap. Bur I don't think getting any boat from Perth to anywhere is easy. That's your problem - if you bought it how would you get it to NSW?
Piece of cake.. hop round the corner to Albany then a hop to Pt Fairy.. after that its child's play..

Well, that depends on mentosfly's experience and confidence, if the boat's in good nick. PLENTY of westerlies now. If it is, it will take good care of him/her.

Dude!

You really need some tourism training. Last time you sailed straight past Wine Glass Bay in Tassie, and now you have suggested that someone sails past the BEST wine making district in Australia.

Sheesh!

I think you need to get yourself down here for some on site training. I can help you.

I can help you there. I have a special 5 step program, it starts not far from Port Fairy too.

Coonawarra, McLaren Vale, Adelaide Hills, The Barrossa and The Clare

Of course.. the final steps tend to be a bit wobbly...

Does this seem too cheap or a good deal?

Used Swanson 30 for Sale | Yachts For Sale | Yachthub

Certainly worth a look, but then I am biased. FWIW I could not spot any obvious issues so it would come down to overall condition as against anything apparent from the inventory.

The Swanson boats are not usually troubled by osmosis, but then that boat, like mine, was not built in the Swanson Brother's yard so it would come down to the competence of the particular builder. At least with the Swanson designs there was no pressure to lay them up very light so chances are it will be a good hull. The 30 has no particular problems that I have heard of and they were, I think, one of the faster Swanson designs.

Edit: the S30 seems to have been a particularly rare build with one person claiming only 6 were built. Makes the true value of the boat harder to determine. Also, looking harder at those photos on a bigger IPad I reckon the boat itself is pretty tired. Maybe no show stoppers but at least a lot of elbow grease will be needed. Nothing wrong with that in my books if you get a good buy that can be rescued by basic labour rather than big $$$

Re: Buy In Australia

In California and the Caribbean, hanging out working in the community helping crew, boatsitting, maintenance work, transporting etc for a while, you will come across many many firesale bargains, lots of people trying the liveaboard dream then discover it's not for them, accidents, illness, divorce they just want out quick; if you're in the right place right time with cash in hand, Bob's your uncle!

And learn a lot in the meantime, become part of a great community.
