As has been said by others, you can compensate by going larger with the same accomodation, but that has problems of berthing and handling short handed as well. IMHO 43 ft is the max I would consider for a crew of two + occassional visitors.

Unless, of course, you have a rig designed for easy handling, such as a wingsail rig based on modifications to the junk rig to make it more close-winded and aerodynamic. I agree that the standard marconi sloop rig was designed to give the maximum of difficulty and entertainment to large crews of athletic young men striving to race around a few buoys on sunny summer afternoons, after which they would hit the showers and yacht club bar.

Now then, a question... Anybody fitted solar and wind generator to the back of a Priv 435 or 465? Where do you mount them to keep them out of the way of the mainsheet?

Mike . we have an air marine on s/s tube which fits on the deck inside the rear stern rail and is attached to it. It rises up about 1.5mt then goes aft at 45degrees for about 800mm then up again for 800mm. never touched any thing . you can not touch it even when coming up the back stairs. And for our solar panels we had a s/s frame built that bolts to the existing davits and extends to the same height as the bimini roof and the panels are on a hinged tube on top .Since raising the panels above the bimini it has kept them in the sun all day and doubled the output. Yes I was thinking of attaching the solar panels to the davits but not raising them to the level of the bimini. SInce you say that makes a big difference to the output I'll have to consider doing the same. Do you have any photos of the setup that you can post online?

Our 37' Priv has a similar configuration and we put one solar panel on an arch/dinghy davits and two other panels on bimini. On one side of the arch we have a pole to support the wind gen and radar. On the other side, we attached an SSB antennae. See pics below.

It looks as though your mainsheet setup is similar to main so the photos are very useful. I had been concerned that the mainsheet could get hung up on a frame mounted on the davits but presumably yours doesn't. Thanks Greg

Keith the front of the Barbeque is out side the llife lines on brackets and on the port side next to the davit. cheers Mick
