You must not be familiar with Dave, of the Privilege 39 Exit Only, or his brilliant website:

Welcoming to Maxing Out

Search Cruisers Forum for Dave's many posts - you'll learn everything you ever wanted to know about sailing safely and responsibly.

Philip...

I have 435 hull 23. I don't know of an owner's forum anywhere. With only about 40 boats made each we are a much smaller group of people than those owning one of the mass-market cats.

Hey Mike!!!
He certainly does and what a wonderful boat it is!!
We chartered her for 13 days and really enjoyed the boat, the interior and comfort is second to none, the woodwork and finish is awesome even after 5 years in charter.
One of the best layouts by far I have seen, the build quality is timeless, craftsmanship abounds in compared to any "charter barge"

Sure looking forward to sparring with Jeannius on a fun Flotilla in BVI June '08!! I'll provide a link to THAT event.
We will be aboard a Voyage 440 Plus, would have been aoard Jeannius, but not available!

Hey Doggie and Mike,
We were on her sister ship the Snowbird for the first half of our 12 day charter, beautiful boat. The second half of the charter was aboard the new Lagoon 420, which was not ready for charter. Love those twin deisels and the A/C, we needed blankets at night.

When we purchased our Privilege 39 in 1993, the factory was building three Privilege 39s and one Privilege 48 each month. They also were putting out a few 43 and 45s.

We were hull number 93, and we were near the end of the production run for the 39. For practical purposes, you can figure that there are nearly 100 of the 39s out there in various parts of the world. We saw them in French Polynesia, Thailand, USA, Med, and Caribbean.

We also saw many other Privilege cats of all sizes. About 70% of the 39s went into charter initially. There are still a few of them in charter here and there. Lost Our Marbles is in charter in Bequia and the Grenadines for example.

I don't know of an owners association for the Privilege cats, although there are plenty of them out there for such a group to exist. They will be around for a long time because they are nearly bullet proof cats. I have had my cat for 13 plus years, and no structural problems to date, and that's with a circumnavigation under our belt.

One thing that was very noticable on the Privelege 435, a much stiffer structure.
Jeannius felt rock solid going to weather thru chop and waves, the R&C cats (M4000, M4200 and M4300) we have chartered felt very flexible in structure, creaked and moaned under load and even "shuddered" a few times, felt like everything was moviing!!

I have the 37 and it is great boat. My wife and I have cruised and lived on it for 2 years or so. I'd love to have one of the bigger privilege's, but that will have to wait a bit.

Our Privilege 39 catamaran became progressively heavier during our eleven year circumnavigation. In spite of the weight, we found that we sailed the same distance each day. We averaged 150 to 180 miles a day using conservative amounts of sail. If we wanted to push the boat hard around the clock with two people on watch flying a spinnaker in the trade winds, we could have done 200+ miles a day. But it was never worth the effort or risk to us.

Offshore world cruising is a marathon and making it into a sprint was too much work and involved too much risk for a family sailing around the world. We could sail downwind at six or seven knots without any white knuckles, without getting thrown about, without any worries, with the autopilot doing all the work and with the crew checking around the horizon every ten minutes.

The thing that determined our miles sailed and speed sailed each day, was not the weight of our catamaran. The speed was there if we needed it, but we were kind to our boat and crew, and we arrived safely at our destination without any worries. If we had pushed harder, we might have arrived a day or two earlier, but we would have enjoyed the trip less.

For us it was all about having an enjoyable sail. Everything that we had on our boat made for a more enjoyable and safer voyage.
