I don't think the shipping companies are the least bit interested in recovering the goods inside.

I doubt that even the insurers are

Re: Another 40 containers!

Given the weather on the NSW coast, and the precarious nature of some of the remaining containers, Brisbane would be the safer option to asses and rectify the situation....

On a completely other note, seems like England would be the very last name choice for an APL ship. I guess times have changed.

The type of rolling that sheds deck cargo is somewhat unique to container ships is called parametric rolling. It occurs head to sea or stern to sea, what works on yachts and even other deep sea ships doesn’t work on container ships.

Very interesting! Could you explain what is different about container ships?

My amateur suspicion is that it is related to the high stacks of containers with the attendent weight distribution WAY above the WL and various centers of Naval Architecture mystery.

Then, would the ship be better off with beam on seas? (Impressive video).

Maybe, or maybe not....
You can then get synchronous rolling...

Re: Another 40 containers!

After the containers fell off (the reported position given by Marine Rescue Sydney this morning was 36 nm SSW of Botany Bay), the ship had a number of containers at risk of falling off on either side of the ship. It turned around and headed north with the seas behind it, presumably at the direction of AMSA (Australian Maritime Safety Authority). My guess is they wanted to get it into the relative calm Moreton Bay off Brisbane to do something about the containers threatening to fall overboard.

At about 10 am this morning, an AMSA jet circled the APL England off Byron Bay about half a dozen times. My guess is they were filming and photographing the damage to help decide in advance how to fix the problem that remains.

The location where the containers fell of is over the continental shelf, well over a 1000 metres deep. Since the containers are full, it is most likely that the majority would have sank. Marine Rescue was giving out Securite warnings all day, not that there were any private boats out there in the conditions (not one boat logged on in all NSW today).

Yea, even if the goods weren't ruined the cost of the salvage would not be worth it for them.

Re: Another 40 containers!

It’s been suggested that the latest incident of container loss off Ameland was parametric rolling but the previous MSC Zoe’s lost 270 boxes in the same area was with a beam sea and she apparently touched bottom with the turn of the bilge during a roll.

Because this is how things happen wherever you are in the world...

thats 'HOW'

Why didn't APL England go into Port Botany? Maybe the massive sea she would have had on the beam....

Who is in charge and making the descisions... ? AMSA? the owners??

No... the ship's master....!

sigh...

That will help in the decision making process

Must be a decent bit of weather you are experiencing on the NSW coast.

That low passed close north of us in NE Victoria the other day... gave some interesting weather around Melbourne...
