We cruised these isles three summers past. The locals comment on a “bygone era”, but from my impressions most of those photos could have been taken today.
Lerwick would certainly be unrecognisable now: it has been “discovered” and
cruise ships
anchor off the town disgorging hundreds of tourists, deeply changing the character of the place, but most of the islands seem untouched by time.
The hospitality, too, is likely to have changed little since those slides were processed. All through
Europe I have grown accustomed to cars stopping to offer me a
lift in
remote spots, but in the Shetlands this was even experienced if cars passed going in the opposite direction. If we anchored within sight of a house, there would generally be someone dashing down to the beach to invite me for a cuppa before I had even dragged the
dinghy ashore. We made some good friends.
Thanks for stirring some wonderful memories.
