Right? I was thinking the same thing.

Making a mental note not the plot a course through that area. I know. All the water is the same everywhere in the world yada yada yada.

But that’s just like a place where too many things go wrong.

Sad fact though that these chèque book adventurers now get huge media attention and the 500 people who drowned at the deepest spot of the Mediterranean few days ago start to fade into history.

I get the reason of the why (fascinating technology, the most famous shipwreck of all...), but, it's sad.

You can open a thread about the poor souls who succumbed in the med, I have followed it in the news, unfortunately I think it would get political in a thread, but you can try, I subscribe.

Re: Titanic tourist submersible goes missing

"We know there's about 40 hours of breathable air left based on that initial report," Capt. Jamie Frederick, of the 1st Coast Guard Response Department, told reporters.
The 96 hours could expire by about 3 p.m. NT on Thursday.

To complicate things further, there is no equipment currently at the scene that can retrieve the crew if they are found alive.

Frederick was asked if he believes help will arrive in time.
"I don't know the answer to that question," he replied.

He would have said "yes", if he didn't mean "no."

Here's todays NYT article: https://www.nytimes.com/live/2023/06...sing-submarine

Re: Titanic tourist submersible goes missing

This is a tough one. Sudden lack of comm and not surfacing is not a good position to be in. Hard to be optimistic here.

Even if it surfaced, the crew can't get out without an external assistance. It can only be opened from the outside.

Hard to be optimistic with this one.

Yea no observation deck on that one, so radar will have a real tough time picking it up, if they are lucky enough to get to the surface…. Risk/reward paradigm on this would be a non starter if they paid me 200k US to go.
I wonder what the conversation is inside.

They take a calculated risk rather than living a life sitting on the couch watching TV. This is much like cruising sailors that cross oceans, or explore remote areas in a small sailboat. Many cannot understand this lifestyle.

Sometimes things go wrong.

Lets wish our fellow mariners all the best for a safe and speedy recovery.

there's a heck of lot to do besides sitting on a couch watching TV or paying 250K to see a shipwreck 12800 feet down. it could be a risk heading over to the grocery store. you never know
