2900 RPM Generators

Does anyone have experience with the mid speed 2800 RPM Diesel Generators?
I'm considering a Next Gen 5.5kw, because of it's small footprint.
I'd prefer an 1800 RPM, but can't find one with the allowable space that I have.

I'll be using it to run two A/C units: an 18,000 BTU and a 16,000 BTU.
I'd also like to run a dive compressor, using a Soft Start Capacitor... which I know is pushing it.

Is anyone using one of these 5.5kw 2800 RPM gensets? How is the noise level, and can you run it continuously for several hours, i.e. Air Conditioning?

Re: 2900 RPM Generators

I've had a Nextgen 5.5 for about three years and I bought the sound enclosure. The noise level is pretty low and I have run two 15K btu AC units for about 12 hours on it. Total amp draw was about 28. Voltage sagged from 120 no load to about 110. I turned on a battery charger which drew 5 amps and the voltage dropped to 105. My AC units are supposed to be god to 95v but amperage draw goes up as the voltage goes down. The enclosure requires the use of an extractor squirrel cage fan. The stock fan is only rated at 1000 hrs, so if you plan on putting lots of hours on it you'll want to spring for the upgraded fan. Though I have not had any significant trouble because of this detail, you should know that the only part that came with my unit that was as quoted in the online literature was the Kubota engine. The alternator head was a different brand (Italian), the alternator drive belt is a v-belt, not the heavy duty motorcycle drive belt, the water pump">raw water pump was Johnson, and even the voltage controlling capacitors are different.

I don't know what is going on but the term "raw water pump" above displays perfectly normally while I'm editing but reverts to what you see above.

Cp Bill; I just bought a 5.5kW nextgen and the manual calls for a Oberdorfer rw impeller. Did you ever source a more convenient impeller? Jabsco, etc? thanks,

That's what my manual says too. If you look closely at the pump you'll probably find it's a Johnson. The Johnson impeller is pretty easy to find. I would get the number off of the pump and look it up. With four years between when I bought mine and now there's a reasonable chance that they are using an different pump than in the documentation or that's installed on my unit.

Re: 2900 RPM Generators

Some people have switched to wet-rotor 120vac pumps with good results.

Look into a VFD for starting your compressor.
