Re: SasPlanet

Hi, is there anybody who got sas planet working on Linux?
I am using Pop Os on an old Macbook. I managed to open a map once and have never been able to change to a new map.
Tried the same on Windows 11, which is an absolute nightmare and impossible to get working.
Should I try to find a Windows XP or 7 to get sas Planet working? I'd prefer the Linux though.
Getting maps displayed on open CPN via Sat to Chart does not work either on both systems.
But, by the sounds of it, it should be doable somehow.
Any help is welcome. I have been working on thisf or two years now on and off with no success so far

Cheers,
Atmo

I can install it on raspberry pi5 running Bareboat Necessities Linux image by following these instructions:

SAS works fine on both W10 and W11.
Download the Sasplanet.zip file from Paul (Sat2Chart)'s site.
https://gdayii.ca/Downloads/
Unzip to C:\
Make a shortcut to SASPlanet.exe and put on your desktop or wherever.
Runs straight out of the box--no installer needed.

The most comprehensive discussion on making satellite charts from SAS.Planet using Sat2Chart (IMHO) is Jon Hacking's writeup. He even covers installing all the pieces, etc.

Making mbTiles

I have a much simpler writeup on how simple it is to make ONE chart (Jon focuses on making huge charts of entire islands). I made it into a presentation for cruisers, downloadable as a PDF.

Intro to Satellite Chart Making

All the already made mbtiles and kap charts that I know about are linked on our website here:
https://svsoggypaws.com/SatCharts/

See the "List of Other Chart Sources" link.

Good luck, have fun. Hope you get it installed on Linux.

Satellite charts are amazing, but we also have an active Navionics subscription on a tablet, a Garmin chartplotter on the helm, and CMap charts when those are not complete crap. (no paper though!)

SasPlanet works fine on Linux through WINE.

Re: SasPlanet

Hello to everybody,
I think that I have a wrong setting of Sasplanet since the “download” function seems not working properly.
Settings different zoom levels (in most of the cases I use 14-17) and lunching “download “ command, it seems is working but when I export the mbtiles file (same zoom levels), the higher zooms are not available.
Viceversa, if I move the selected area to display on the screen and for each zoom level I’ve selected, I see the tiles downloading on the screen (I must wait till queue is zero) and the final exported mbtiles file is perfect! But this is very time consuming
I do not know if I’m not enough understandable.
Thanks for your support

Re: SasPlanet

I have only ever used the version of SasPlanet downloadable from Paul's site (GE2KAP/Sat2Chart). It works fine using Sat2Chart. I have never tried making mnbtiles using SasPlanet only.
The download site for Paul's version of SasPlanet is
https://gdayii.ca/Downloads/
This is tweaked to work with Sat2Chart, but it might solve your issue.
Download the SasPlanet.zip file and unzip to C:\

Thank you very much for your prompt and clear feedback.
I know very well the fantastic job done and on going by Paul.
Unfortunately if I remember well the Sasplanet version I’m using has been downloaded from Paul’s site.
I will double check everything, it might be trying to use with sat2chart as per your suggestion and I will come back
Thank you again
Ps: and I know also your website that I’ve read manytimes

Re: SasPlanet

Elan,
There isn't a download command in SASPlanet.

You are doing it correctly. You have to run the Selection Manager for the path/polygon you want and let it finish.

You can up the number in "Split Selection" to make downloads go faster (I use 10 for ArcGIS, BingSat and GoogleSat). It's useful to click "Close Download when Finished".

Then you hit START and wait until everything is downloaded. If you don't have a great internet connection, it's useful to do it twice in case any tiles were missed. (2nd time will be much faster).

It also speeds things up if you download 14-16 and then run it again with just 17. This only matters if you Split the selection.

After all zoom levels are downloaded, you use the export function in the selection manager to create the MBTile.

You just have to wait until the first part (downloading the tiles) is finished before exporting to MBTile.

Does that help?
Cheers,
Bruce

Thanks so much Bruce for your clear explanation.
It seems that it is what I do; in any case I will start from zero downloading Sasplanet (and Sat2chart) from Paul’s website and I will check situation.
Thanks again

Re: SasPlanet

Hello to everybody,
Following your suggestion I’ve downloaded from Paul’s site (Thank you very much again Paul) both Sasplanet (that if I’ve understood correctly it is not the last version ) and Sat2chart
I’ve start to learn Sat2chart and in effect it seems that downloading and exporting with Sat2chart I do not have the boring problem above described.
Good !
Now I have to understand better how to create a chart with polygons using Sat2chart (I understood that I have to create the polygon with Sasplanet and then connect the file using Sat2chart, ok I deem to be close)
Viceversa using the tricky described by YouTube video I’m able to see Navionics charts but Sat2chart give me an error.
To me it is very important to have as layer Navionics because of the batimetric data.
It needless to say that I’ve just started to understand the big potentiality of Sat2chart
Thanks to all for your support

Re: SasPlanet

Elan,
Due to changes at the Garmin/Navionics website, the Navionics charts are not available right now. Jon H mentioned that people are working on it. CMAP charts work but only if you use no more than 2 threads. So very slow.
Cheers,
Bruce

Thank you Bruce, ok
As I said Sasplanet with the trick described in the video works with Navionics so you can create the charts using only Sasplanet but not with Sat2chart

Re: SasPlanet

My situation:
1) I'm using Sat2chart downloaded from Paul's server
2) Sasplanet
2.1) with the folder Maps coming from youtube video suggestion (see my post above) Navionics maps are visible as Layer. Good ! But, using Sat2chart I get the error as per picture attached

2.2) with the original Maps folder Sat2chart works properly but I do not see Navionics charts (OK, clear, Paul is working on this issue, thanks again Paul)

It might be that using Maps folder coming from video, it could be possible to solve the error as per file attached

Hoping to have provided some useful infos

I've noticed that using Sasplanet with the folder "maps" coming from the video, there is the reference of Garmin website (instead of old Navionic website); this should be, at least, one of the reasons that it is possible to see Navionics charts; see below
