Polar files?

Are there any repository of polar files for weather routing?
I do understand that it depends on a lot of factors, and a big one is the skipper. But still...

Seapilot website has polars for some common vessels. Maybe a good starting point. Best to create your own based on your boat and sail config.

Weather_routing has a very large set of polar files.

I had extended that set with a very substantial additional group of polar files, and asked for user volunteers to verify operation with weather_routing and to check and unify the formats, but had no volunteers!

Therefore I have removed that extended set because it is not "cleaned up"!
I still have these files and they can be found in github here:

I still have hopes that users will volunteer to clean up these extra polars so they can be added to the data folder again.


My view about OpenCPN: Users have an obligation to contribute towards maintenance, editing and improving the wiki and helping to improve the program in whatever ways possible, as well as donate to the main program and plugin authors (some have paypal accounts) because we depend on everyone pulling together to keep this program going.

There are quite a lot of these files. Exactly what needs to be done to them?

Yes, there are. I have been collecting them for years.
What needs to be done.
1. Test each one to make sure they work in weather_routing.
2. If they don't work, using a text editor, see what the problem is and make appropriate changes.
3. The Polar_pi plugin may be helpful in this respect, by loading the polar in polar_pi, checking the polar and then exporting it, the format may be changed to a more uniform format for weather_routing. (I have not tested this process yet, but I know Peter T. augmented and programmed it to be compatible with weather_routing.
4. Then package the files somewhere accessible.

You can get a base polar file from qtvlm and adjust it to match you boat's performance.
