otidalplan_pi - planning with tidal current harmonics

Some work has been done to make ETA calculations possible using tidal current harmonics.

https://github.com/Rasbats/otidalpla...eases/tag/v0.1

This plugin uses an idea from Nobeltec. Tidal currents are attached to a route and then the route is calculated.

DR calculations are also possible.

Windows only installer at present.

In the code the calculations are made for three minute time intervals. If you have two very short routes and slow speed the calculation will fail, with a warning.

The template for a lot of this came from the Weather Routing plugin. Thanks Sean.

Instructions for use will follow.

Only for use in narrow channels so far! I have an issue with the maximum distance for searching for currents.

A fix for open waters like the English Channel.

Now back to the guide.

A guide has been added to the GitHub release.

The pdf is too large to post here.

Had to make a small correction to allow the plugin to compile on Linux:

https://github.com/Rasbats/otidalpla...eases/tag/v0.3

Installers for Windows and Ubuntu 18.04.3 (AMD64) are available.

Re: otidalplan_pi - planning with tidal current harmonics

Great tool thanks. I keep getting this error when I push "Attach Currents" and select the route:
"Unable to calculate ETA over two legs at this speed. Aborting"
I have tried a few different speeds but that does not seem to change the outcome.
Is there a fix for this?
OpenCPN 5.0.0
I attached the route as well (Fishing Bay Marina to Stingray Point Boat works)

Re: otidalplan_pi - planning with tidal current harmonics

@ramalkin...
The problem is that there are too many waypoint too close together. The plugin will only allow three dr leg points that are closer together than the leg distance. Perhaps I need to include 1 mile dr legs.

If you simplify the route it does work. See attached (but please correct for my planning). See the pdf on the release page for more details.

Mike, may I suggest 1/2mile for exceptional routing.
Have a good day.

Re: otidalplan_pi - planning with tidal current harmonics

Hi,

could anyone please post a link to a current harmonic file for use in (southern) Europe?

Alternatively send me a PM and I provide you an email where I could receive it.

Thank you.

Here it is. Go to options, charts and change for the idx file. First removed the tcdata in the program file and copy this one in lieu. Remove the pdf and unzip first before copying.
