Should this change be made still with version 5.6.2, or after the update to 5.8.0?

I thank you for your goodwill
Rename it to anything you like. While OpenCPN is not running. No other requirements.

The idea is to rename the present ini-file to something else while OCPN is not running. Whatever file name you like. It will not be used.
Then on next start of O 5.8 a new opencpn.ini file will be created. A new clean configuration where only default settings from a clean start will be set up. The assumption is O will now start without trouble and you can start to change settings and install plugins as you desire.

Oops.. I didn't saw Nohal's advice before posting.

Re: OpenCPN Version 5.8.0 Released

I've been using opencpn for years simply as a route planning tool on my home PC, but am about to start using it on the boat in real time. The first thing I noticed in your release notes is:

"- Integrated NMEA 2000 network capability, supporting a variety of popular bus interface adapters"

Prior to reading this, my plan was to use signalK simply as a means of getting my nmea 2000 data into opencpn without having to "down-convert" everything to nmea0183. I was going to do:

Yacht Devices YDEN-02<->SignalK<->openCPN

Does opencpn 5.8 allow me to remove SignalK from the equation and input/output NMEA 2K data via the YDEN-02 (or similar) directly into openCPN?! I was unable to find the documentation of this new feature .....can someone comment and also point me to any info.

Thanks,
--Howie

The YDEN-02 allows you to not use SignalK. Many people use SignalK, I think, simply because they don't realize they don't need it. SignalK has some advanced features that are useful, but it isn't needed for most boats at all. IMHO, SignalK is too complicated to setup and get working unless you need some of the advanced features.

Yes, indeed. We recommend the YDNU-02, which is a N2k<->USB interface, directly supported by OpenCPN 5.8.

We do not yet support the YDEN device, which is a proprietary N2K<->ethernet interface.

Thanks

Many people are using SignalK without OpenCPN for goals different from O. OpenCPN doesn’t support Victron MQTT and is not boat automation, sensors gateway or data collection server which SignalK is.

Thanks, but unfortunately it didn't work.
Even with the new .ini file created after the recommended change has been made, even then the program only opens the default map view, but does not show the menus or anything else.

Cheers

ZUZA....

Next step, more intrusive, is to rename/save the entire ProgramData/OpenCPN directory. Then install O58 from scratch, and see how that goes.

I'm pretty sure it is hanging on some older plugin load.

Default OpenCPN config doesn’t show menus.
(As far as I remember) You can enable them yourself.

OK, but wouldn't it be the same thing to disable all plugins in safe mode?

Not quite. Some older plugins are not recognized by the safe mode switch.

I’ve just tried. Removed opencpn.conf.
Then it starts without menus.

mgrouch...
Hmmm... Same experiment, and no problem here. New config file is created as required.
Possibly something leftover in plugins directory?

Anything you can do to isolate the problem would sure be useful.
Thanks

Do you see menu bar? Top one?
It’s been same behavior for me in all past 4 releases.
A user has to go to setting and enable top menu there to see it.
