New Raspberry Pi 5 and OpenCPN

New Raspberry Pi 5 and OpenCPN.

Just tried the new Raspberry Pi 5 with the flatpak OpenCPN.

First using the latest RaspiOS 64 on the basis of Debian Bookworm.

Can be installed from the internet. Works direct out of the "box".

Then the latest Ubuntu Mantic Minotar 23.10. But that did not work. You have to add the following sentence to the config.txt

os_check=0 .

Working twice as fast as the RPi 4 with the same power consumption of 4-6 Watt.

Debian Rawhide does not work yet on the RPI 5.

Did you install a fan? Not too hot?

Hi Ozolli,

i have just received the RPI5 and have not yet tried it with continues use on the boat.

Only fitted an alu heat dissipation unit.

Thanks Bram!

I am running a Pi4 with a Pican-M hat in a Pican-M enclosure.
Usually the Pi4 CPU temp is around 33°C more than the room temp.
I wonder how it would be with a Pi5 in this enclosure...

I don't have an enclosure for the RPI5. It is still early days, But after running the Pi5 for some time the processor becomes hot and needs a fan.

The 5 is running on RaspiOS (based on bookworm) and Ubuntu Mantic Minotaur.

I have allready the latest Fedora 39 Rawhide on an SSD. Runs excellent on the Pi4, however not on the RPI5

Bram

Re: New Raspberry Pi 5 and OpenCPN

Just awaiting the Pi5 from Digikey. Coming in 2 days. Running OpenCPN / OpenPlotter on the Pi4 with the PiCan-M hat, so looking forward to trying it on the Pi5.

Does anyone know if the PiCan-M will work with the 5?

Re: New Raspberry Pi 5 and OpenCPN

There is a new version of the RaspiOS 64. Works on the RPI5 and the RPI4.

Installed the Flatpak OpenCPN version 5.8.4.-2 and this works.

However there a problems with the left piano bar. Appears normal at the start. But as soon as I click on the charts the piano bar disappears to another location outsidethe OpenCPn screen.

If I install the Dashboard plugin. It works, but stays in the middle of the screen and cannot be moved.

There is a problem with these windows in OpenCPN in combination with RaspiOS based on Debian Bookworm.

Re: New Raspberry Pi 5 and OpenCPN

Hi,
I encounter the same problem, Raspi5, BookWorm, FlatPack and OpenCpn.
The menu bars cannot be moved, no button bar, and the dashboard cannot be moved as well.
If anyone has a good idea...
Thanks
Christophe

Christophe..
Until Wayland on Rpi's are fixed you may try X11.
Terminal: sudo raspi-config -> 6 Advanced ->A6 switch to X11

Re: New Raspberry Pi 5 and OpenCPN

Have not tried the X server version. But with the Wayland version with the latest RaspiOS now the two finger touchscreen for in- and out zoomen works. This without the setting in OpenCPN.

You must leave this switched off.

Screen movements are very fast and all things works. Except the flaws with some screen windows. Pianobar and Dashboard. Grib window works well.

Running om RPI4 and 5 with the same version. Including Oesenc and Signalk.

Re: New Raspberry Pi 5 and OpenCPN

Another small problem. I'am using the SignalK server with a connection to OpenCPN.

This works well at first time. Then after a reboot no GPS in OpenCPN from the signalk server.

At first i have to give bram rights to use the serial ports.

sudo usermod -a -G dialout bram

But after a reboot i have to repeat this action then reboot again and GPS output works in
OpenCPN. What can be the cause of this behavior ? Is the setting not saved ?

Re: New Raspberry Pi 5 and OpenCPN

Hi Hakan,
I switched to X11 and now the button bars and the dashboard are ok. Thanks for the tips.

But the display is very slow and the openGL option is disabled and cannot be checked.
Do you have any idea.
Thanks
Christophe

Re: New Raspberry Pi 5 and OpenCPN

Wayland seems the way to go for most of the Linux distributions.

It is only a small problem. And Wayland works very well with the latest RaspiOS (Bookmark) dated 05-12.

And now with the 2 finger touch zooming. Perhaps that is the cause of the problem. At the start the right pianobar appears. But if I touch the screen it disappears from the screen.
