Re: New Raspberry Pi 5 and OpenCPN

Dear Nohal, dear Dave,

yes changing the flavour helped and now o-charts plugin is working.

I got in this situation by downloading a beta version of openplotter-settings and installing it via:
sudo dpkg -i ./openplotter-settings_4.0.51-beta_all.deb.

Then from OpenPlotterSettings I could install said OpenCPN version.

I thank you both for your time and support.

The link to the bookworm-backports does not seem to be helpful to me, since it looks to me that it downloads the source of OpenCPN I need to compile then on my Pi.

If this is the only "good" solution I can easily wait until there is a official version for OpenCPN and/or Openplotter available for bookworm and Pi5.

Best,

Manfred

Re: New Raspberry Pi 5 and OpenCPN

Stop trying to download stuff manually and most of your problems will never exist. OpenCPN 5.8.4 is a debian package in the bookworm-backports repository. If it is not yet enabled on your system, read https://www.linuxcapable.com/how-to-...ory-on-debian/, enable it and simply apt install opencpn

Re: New Raspberry Pi 5 and OpenCPN

Nohal,

thanks for your hint on backports. New to me, since I am just a user and not a developer. Enabled it and could update OpenCPN and OpenPlotter.

So, everything's ship shape again.

Re: New Raspberry Pi 5 and OpenCPN

For the record. OpenPlotter 4 installs opencpn from backports by default because currently is the best option but this could change in the future as it did in the past, so all the sources are still available: Debian main repo, Debian backport, PPA and flatpak.

Re: New Raspberry Pi 5 and OpenCPN

The RPI 5 is running well with the RaspiOS64 (Bookworm). With the latest update en kernel version almost everything works well with the Wayland server.

There is only one issue with OpenCPN. At the start the display is as usual.

But if I touch the screen with the mouse the right piano moves to another location outside the OpenCPN window. But still works.

All the other functions work well, SignalK server, Oesenc plugin, Flatpak OpenCPN etc.

It is very easy to do.

The rpi connected to the internet. Start system with shift key pressed.

Then you get the installer. Take RaspiOS64 version (is Debian Bookworm).

Put a medium in and then the RaspiOS installs direct from the internet server.

Then the Flatpak enviroment: sudo install flatpak.

Then the OpenCPN version in Flatpak format.

Go to the flathub site, search for OpenCPN, click download (nothing seems to happen).

Then go tot the Downloads folder on your system. There is the installation rule.

Then sudo flatpak install (the sentence you have received).

Restart and the OpenCPN icon is shown. Update the Plugins and you are ready.

Last time I tried the flatpack lots of plugins were missing. Openplotter V3 has the debian/ubuntu PPA set up already, seemed much more up to date with all the plugins though that was a little while ago.

Openplotter certainly easier to set up with just mouse clicks. Haven't tried V4 on a Pi 5 though.

Re: New Raspberry Pi 5 and OpenCPN

Flatpak OpenCPN has all the available plugins. As I mentioned before you must update the plugins and install whatever you prefer.

Flatpak is the universal setup for most of the Linux distributions. Works here on RaspiOS64, Ubuntu Mantic and Fedora39 (however still RPI4 only) and on my AMD64 systems.

must have been updated since I tried it, half the plugins were missing even in the beta or alpha catalogues but was a while ago. Was happy when the PPA was updated to have one less layer of software.

Jrobin - if you give openplotter a go to install it would be interesting to hear how you get on

Re: New Raspberry Pi 5 and OpenCPN

The problem with PPA is that for every distribution all the plugins must be revised. Therefore lagging far behind.

With Flatpak you have one size fits almost all Linux versions.. And you have the application running in a "sandbox" separate from other things running.

With the Flatpak OpenCPN version you have all the available plugins available.

Just tried the new Raspberry Pi 5 with the flatpak OpenCPN.

First using the latest RaspiOS 64 on the basis of Debian Bookworm.

Can be installed from the internet. Works direct out of the "box".

Then the latest Ubuntu Mantic Minotar 23.10. But that did not work. You have to add the following sentence to the config.txt

os_check=0 .

Working twice as fast as the RPi 4 with the same power consumption of 4-6 Watt.

Debian Rawhide does not work yet on the RPI 5.

Bram

by any chance - being probably a bit less technical that all of you out there - is there a simple step by step guide on how to install openCPN on a raspberry pi 5?
