Is there an intention to have OpenCPN on iPad?
I’m currently using Memory-Map but they don’t appear to be updating their charts.

The conditions of the Apple app store ban free software under GPL.
There is no sign that this will change.
Short answer: no OpenCPN on iOS.

Could this situation be remedied by charging a dollar?

On our Ipads, we often used Navionics. They have been purchased by the Garmin company, so longevity is questionable, although for now the app enjoys large amounts of data added by active captain and Garmin.

I have recently been shopping the "Dell Rugged Extreme" tablets. Thinking I may make the switch one day. You may check those out. Tablets are the new MFD.. haha Although thats a fire-y discussion.

It's not about charging or not.
The GPL open source license OpenCPN is working under is not accepted by Apple for apps in their App Store.
Different from Android and the Play Store.

It is not a question of licensing to publish a software at Apple Store but it is a question of know-how. Apple has 2 operating systems (OS): iOS and macOS. Actually there is no OpenCPN version available which runs with iOS. There is only an OpenCPN version available which should run with macOS but as seen not with any Mac machine and macOS version.

Spend $125 and buy a Samsung tab A or similar. I have CPN running on 2 tablets. One is backup. Also setting up a network with a PI 4.
So far this has proven dependable, inexpensive, and versatile.
