Re: Help / FAQ

Steve Bryant at VMH is very helpful. I have used the VMH charts on the Irish coast, including Galway!

Re: Help / FAQ

It seems both VMH raster charts (https://www.visitmyharbour.com/unified-charts.asp) and o-charts vector chart (http://o-charts.org/map/en/UK/index.html) cover Ireland equaly well. Which is pretty understandable as they both are based on the same official Admiralty data.

If you want to make your own mbTiles, the tools & data are all free on the internet, but it does require time, lots of data downloads, & a Windows computer. I've written a How To article on Making mbTiles that walks you through the process.

Thanks Jon have added that to the MbTiles page

Wow. Thanks!

I see you've included our KAPs repository page as well, so thanks again.

We've now got all of those areas covered with 5 different maps of mbTiles, but we don't have the bandwidth, here in the Philippines, to upload them to the web so others can download them. We'll be doing that if/when we can ever get back to the US.

Re: Help / FAQ

Hi new OpenCPN user here. Any idea why Canadian grib2 files aren't loadable in here? This must be a very simple answer. Sourced from:https://dd.weather.gc.ca/model_gem_r.../grib2/18/000/
All I can see is "No Valid Grib" when I try to load it.

Thanks.

Re: Help / FAQ

Well you are absolutely right, they are not a valid grib file! I tried one and got the same result. Just kidding. They are not working with grib_pi.

I have looked for information about these gribs but don't know the source other than the ftp site you gave. Can you provide some links to the website that explain more about the gribs being dispensed and what their source is?

Meanwhile I will post this to Opencpn Issues and perhaps someone will advise shortly. ...However everyone is quite busy right now.

Re: Help / FAQ

Thanks rgleason for the sanity check. These gribs are from the Canadian Meteorological Centre in Montreal. They should have the same encoding as any grib2. Maybe they need to be optimized for OpenCpn. Is the another utility I should try to see what's wrong?

Re: Help / FAQ

They are an rather unusual Polar version that is not used that often as far as I know. I believe this type can be added, but it will take some time. Many thanks to Dan!

I would like to suggest that you use NOAA GFS for the time being.

Actually, I tried to view Cdn grib2 files for here on the BC coast (certainly not "polar") and also was unsuccessful. The Cdn grib2 files include high-resolution "HRDPS" (LAM) data with 2.5km resolution. (I can access these data on the internet via vizaweb, but was hoping to be able to download via HAM useable files while in remote aeeas.)

Re: Help / FAQ

Ok thanks to the community here I have lots more to go on than I did 5 days ago. I guess I will have to put my thinking cap on to figure out a way. Believe it or not Open Cpn is used by Canada Coast Guard for the northern waters and it sure would be best if Canadian model data were offered.

Re: Help / FAQ

sv_pelagia found this link with a search about vizaweb

http://nanoosecps.ca/wp-content/uplo....C.-Waters.pdf

This doc has a link to login/PW to Canadian weather, but I don't have an account.

Do you have a link so I can test them in O grib_pi? Do they work?

Re: Help / FAQ

Vizaweb is great (for Canada)... I use it all the time when I have cell data. Doesn't require much bandwdth/data. You DON'T need an account. The website provides a working login:

user/login: vizaweb
Password: Bewaziv16
https://weather.gc.ca/vizaweb/index_e.html

Here is are some pages explaning grib2 files:
https://weather.gc.ca/grib/index_e.html
https://weather.gc.ca/grib/what_is_GRIB_e.html

Here is a directory for current HRDPS (high resolution) grib2 files. The subdirectories are forecast times (UTC) :

https://dd.weather.gc.ca/model_hrdps/west/grib2/

The grib2 files do not work in OpenCPN.

Re: Help / FAQ

Thank you

zygrib doesn't read this kind https://dd.weather.gc.ca/model_hrdps/west/grib2/

What viewer do you use?

I found a link to Vizaweb which is an online viewer, but now I have lost it.

https://weather.gc.ca/vizaweb/php/animate_e.php

That's it but how to get there?

Re: Help / FAQ

We should probably move this into a new Thread called Gribs - Canadian or something like that, if you wish to continue this discussion.
