Getting Started

Hi All,
I am new (very new) to the Forum and Open CPN! So new that I can't get Opencpn installed.

I have tried downloading the ZIP file - what then?

and have tried installing over "Adding OpenCPN Ubuntu PPA to Raspbian Software Source" but get the message "Package is not available, but is referred to by another package.
This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or is only available from another source.

E: Package "opencpn" has no installation candidate."

Can anyone help - we could also talk over the phone if that is allowed?

I am looking forward to hearing from the comunity.

Re: Getting Started

Do not do any of that (I am developing OpenCPN and I honestly have absolutely no idea what ZIP file you might be refering to - Where do you guys get these ideas from?).

You do not need any PPA, OpenCPN is available directly from the Debian `bookworm-backports` repository (https://wiki.debian.org/Backports).

Or use OpenPlotter or BBN where they already did all the work for you and OpenCPN comes preinstalled and preconfigured.

Re: Getting Started

Hi Nohal,
thanks for your support much appreciated but... I have been on the openplotter site, found the OpenCPN Installer page and followed the instruction to type in a Terminal window "openplotter-opencpn-installer" and get the as answer "command not found"!
I am a complete novice when it comes to IT so it is very confusing - can I be very cheeky and ask you to provide links and commands to get the software installed?
I know that I am asking a lot but if you don't asl....
Thanks in advance

Re: Getting Started

I used that large OpenCPN Raspberry Pi Image zip file also back in 2020 to get OpenCPN on my Raspberry Pi 4's SD Card.

I don't think that version is still available but it was on this page I believe. It was the largest file available at the time for the Raspberry pi.

https://openplotter.readthedocs.io/e...wnloading.html

https://cloud.openmarine.net/s/mxrBi5K7zRj2gDq

Biggest problem I had was extracting it after I downloaded so I finally downloaded WinZip or something like that, extracted it, and sent it to the SD Card that was plugged in to one of my Windows 10 laptop USB ports..

Then moved that to the Raspberry Pi, and it booted up fine.

Now I just use OpenCPN on that Windows 10 laptop with AIS and GPS coming in from my SH VHF 2200.

Re: Getting Started

Look at the first picture on the top of https://openmarine.net/openplotter - it shows the menu from which you start the OpenCPN installer. When you are actually running OpenPlotter.

The Image zip files are under the Raspberry Pi OS Images on the right.

Re: Getting Started

For the image file you may need "Raspberry Pi Imager" to create the image on a SD card.
On "Operating system" Choose "Use custom" and select the (zip) image file.

Openplotter version 4 is also available:

Re: Getting Started

I used Win32 Disk Imager if I remember correctly. You can download it for free.

And sent the info to the SD card in the USB SD Card holder that came with the CanaKit Raspberry Pi 4.
