Chart storage on RPI

Hi!
I'm new to everything here (RPI, Opencpn and this forum!) so please notify me if I post this on the wrong place. My question is quite straightforward but I couldn't find the answer already.

Where do I best store my charts on my Raspberry(4B)? The SD card is 16 GB, which I feel is a bit small for a long cruise through all of Europe. Could I just use a USB stick? In that case, which size? Also: as I understood it, the license for charts (that is not for free) cannot be moved once installed? Will the license "belong" to the memory stick or the SD card in that way?

Thanks!

The CM93 ed2 charts for all of the world takes 1.6 GB. So your 16 GB are plenty enough.

Take an 32 GB SD and a cheap cardreder/writer. Use the card copieer software and copy the 16 GB to the 32 GB. It is very easy to do with Pi-clone.. The cost of a fast 32 GB SD is around € 10,-. Card reader is around € 8,-.

Enc is the Marine standard for marine charts. CM93 covers most of the world sailing area's. These chart are identical to the ENC versions and fully supported by OpenCPN. Latest version is however published in 2014 and is not so easy to get.

You can take look at the website of O-Charts for ENC charts. Or the free charts in the US.

Re: Chart storage on RPI

With a 32GB card I can store 2 sets of charts, every manual and other piece of documentation for the boat in electronic format and still have room for a movie or two. Not all SD cards are created equal, so do the homework on the best types of SD card to use for an rPi.
