Rpi 3 hangs when zoomed out.

Hi All.
Just testing my Raspberry Pi 3 with HW opengl and it is fantastic and totally usable with opencpn. However when zooming out with CM93 vector charts it hangs when the scale goes above 1.0. Is there a workaround for this? I have to reboot the Pi as it brings the whole thing down.

Can confirm the same on RPI 2 HW opengl - Hangs when zooming out to scale 0.7x if zooming fast. Just tried several times and it seems that the freezing happens if you zoom out fast and thereby "overload" the RPI. Zooming slowly seems to work.

Zooming slowly doesn't help on my Pi 3. It always hangs.

sounds like a bug in the driver not opencpn

Re: Rpi 3 hangs when zoomed out.

Just tried my Raspberry PI 3. Took de SD card of the P2. Raspian with OpenPlotter.

Same connections. USB GPS muis. Wifi dongle. RDLSDR dongle for AIS reception via activ usb hub.

VNC server.

Everything worked as before.

No problems with zoomen in OpenCPN 4.2.

I'am using the alu case from Flirc, which has a pillar and contact foam to cool the processor.

However the little window to show the leds are now in the wrong place. I have to make a window on the left site.

I still have no real HW acceleration. Processor is running at 65-70 %

Re: Rpi 3 hangs when zoomed out.

Bram. You really should have a go at the HW opengl. I found it really straight forward according to these instructions: (thanks conachair for the link)

If you are running the current Jessie image, it can be updated to the new version by running

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
sudo apt-get install raspi-gpio
To add the experimental GL driver, you will also need to run

sudo apt-get install xcompmgr libgl1-mesa-dri

It has convinced me that the Pi 3 is the right computer for my next boat.
i guess it is the HW driver causing the Pi to hang. At least I can zoom out enough to plot a route across the Atlantic, not that I ever expect to but you never know.

Re: Rpi 3 hangs when zoomed out.

Maybe the driver has a maximum number of elements in a VBO? Is opencpn using VBO on your rpi3? If so, try hacking the code to disable it and see if it still crashes.

Sorry. Not very good with acronyms.

Thanks for your advise. But the beta 0.7 from OpenPlotter has allready all these items in the image.

Everything reported: allready the latest version.

But I understand that the OpenGL Galium 0.4 on llvmpipe is no real hw accelleration.

Everything works perfect as before, but faster and with more heat on the alu case.

I'am very happy with the Raspberry and the Openplotter additions.

It runs with vnc wireless even on a Ipad.

On board I have an AIS transponder. But here at home I use an RTLSDR dongle and a gpsmouse.

RPI-3 with OpenGL still crashes with VBO disabled when scale approaches 1.0x during zoom out.

Re: Rpi 3 hangs when zoomed out.

Remember rasbian isn't yet optimized for a 64bit processor. The current image is running a bit faster, but in 3-5 weeks it will be a whole different story. I imagine that by late April the pi3 will show that it is more than we could have hoped for

Same here. I'd never noticed as I haven't zoomed out that far before.

Nothing in the terminal, just bang, locks solid.

Hope so. But maybe not straight away...

There's a good deal of info in the latest MagPi..
https://www.raspberrypi.org/magpi-issues/MagPi43.pdf

It looks like for the time being only 32-bit raspbian will be available..

From and interview with Eban Upton:

“Although it is a 64‑bit
core, we’re using it as just a faster
32-bit core,” he reveals about
the Pi 3’s central processing unit.
“I can imagine there’d be some
real benefits [to 64-bit code].
The downside is that you do
really create a separate world. To
access that benefit, you’d have to
have two operating systems. I’m
hoping that someone will come
and demonstrate to me that this
is a good idea

If rasbian isn't optimized another Linux OS will step in and we will all reap the benifits
