Canadian oeSENC charts for OpenCPN

OpenCPN closing gaps: The Canadian vector chart portfolio is now available for OpenCPN in oeSENC format.

More than 1.100 single charts in four sets
- Pacific
- Great Lakes and S. Lawrence River
- Altlantic and St. Lawrence Gulf
- Arctic

The charts are based on the actual CHS charts bringing complete up-to-date information. The licenses come with one year of updates.
The Atlantic set includes the charts for Saint-Pierre and Miquelon.
A single set costs 30CAD/20€/22.50USD

As always more details at o-charts.org

Enjoy the sailing season! And a big "Thank you" goes to our Canadian user community, who pushed us. We have to underline as well that the efficient people from CHS helped us a lot to get this running within just a few weeks.

That's a great way for OpenCPN users to access vector chart data from the Canadian Hydrographic Service for a reasonable price, compared to the "official" CHS chart prices. Well done, break out the bubbly!

Thumbs up Re: Canadian oeSENC charts for OpenCPN

Installed Canadian Pacific coast oeSENC charts today.
The vector charts look great!
Paid using Visa card online.
Big download 1147MB! So be sure to have stable connection. I started by using WiFi but download stalled at 700MB and wouldn't restart download from 700 MB. So I plugged ethernet in and downloaded from beginning without problem.
The 'Your chart preparation is not complete' dialog box pops up a lot. I began to think it was problem, but I just kept clicking 'Yes" many times.
Watch the video couple times before purchasing charts.

Exclamation Re: Canadian oeSENC charts for OpenCPN

CHS vector charts are geared for commercial use and do not include ALL charts...
Vector charts only go up the Fraser River to Douglas Island(Port Mann Bridge).
Beyond Douglas Island requires CHS Raster collection.
For example Fraser River (pac02 raster chart) can be navigated up Harrison River to Harrison Mills. To Harrison Lake during fresh-net (April to July), with River Pilot?
There are some small coves on north coast that only pleasure boats enter, again these are only in Raster collections.
For total coverage you need both Vector and Raster charts.
Purchased 1 CHS raster collection every year; pac01, pac02 and pac03.
Free updates for 24 months after purchase.
I don't see the Raster Collections listed on o-charts.
oeSENC is one heck of a bargain! Well done!

Re: Canadian oeSENC charts for OpenCPN

Yes, the charts sets are huge and one should take care to have really solid connection for download.

We know that the coverage of the CHS raster charts is better for some waters frequented by the typical OpenCPN user.
In the future there will be oeRNCs as well - we are working on that.

For Canada we shall see, as it implies quite a challenge to edit the charts - you have to edit them to make them different from the "Official CHS" charts.
Our license covers CHS raster already - just in case...

Re: Canadian oeSENC charts for OpenCPN

I too downloaded the CHS charts (Atlantic) but I screwed up at the last moment when oeSENC Charts tab function asked me to assign a folder for the files to ... maybe unzip? to. So I can go to the OESENC Charts tab., I see my system dongle name, and I have completely downloaded the charts but I can't find the charts and I am missing the step where I get them to appear in the chart files tab. I'd appreciate any help! (Note that the download and payment etc from O-Charts was flawless, I just messed up by clicking ok without specifying a folder (so the charts were put in an unknown folder that I cant find!!).

I have gone to terminal and run find with \ oesenc, and again with \ chs but without knowing the file type or name, I'm stuck. Any help would be most appreciated!

Thanks!

Re: Canadian oeSENC charts for OpenCPN

I'm not familiar with the comma in Euro money strings. I believe that it's the same as the period used here in the U.S. but wanted to be sure. If so, then the price for "Canada 2020 - Pacific Coast" with current exchange rates is $20.00 U.S.. Is this correct?

Many Thanks
Bill

Re: Canadian oeSENC charts for OpenCPN

Yes, the standard is that decimals are separated by comma.
zero comma five (0,5)
Point is used for thousands: 10.000,00 (10K) or 1.000.000 (one million).

So the license costs twenty Euro or about 22 US$

Re: Canadian oeSENC charts for OpenCPN

Many thanks for this thread, and to o-charts.org for making these Canadian charts available.

I did have a great exchange with bcn on the license and it totally makes sense:

"oeSENC or oeRNC charts do not expire. They will stay on your system until it "dies".

After the licensing period of one year there are just no updates anymore and you can't add back-up systems. As our licensors require."

That is very helpful.

My next question is this: I purchased and downloaded the Great Lakes and successfully installed them on my RasPi system. I have been playing around with them and to get a better idea I zoomed in on an area I know very well and the charts render very nicely. The only thing I can't seem to get to show on the charts are channel marks or buoys. I have played with settings in the setting area and set my vector charts to display everything, and I looked at the individual chart setting (menu from bottom right) and checked off everything. Neither of these changes seems to allow the marks to be displayed on the chart.

Any ideas what I am doing wrong?

Many thanks!

Re: Canadian oeSENC charts for OpenCPN

bcn: Yes, I have enabled those options. Still nothing. So, I rebooted everything, including the whole RasPi. And it now seems everything has taken and low and behold, the marks now appear! Many thanks.
