NMEA 2000 Engine Monitoring

On my boat, I have the Maretron EMS-100 with Yanmar harness, and it works brilliantly. Used it for many years. I have an excellent screen on my Tritons so can conveniently keep an eye on oil pressure, temp, revs, and fuel flow from anywhere on the boat.

I'm helping my friend set up his boat and see that the EMS-100 has been discontinued for years!!

Actisense make something like this -- the EMU-100, but there's no harness -- you have to cut up the engine wiring harness, something I don't really want to do.

What are other people doing?

Depending on the engine - yacht devices has a couple of products

https://yachtdevicesus.com/products/...ateway-ydeg-04
https://yachtdevicesus.com/products/...ateway-ydes-04

The former may require a new engine harness. I have no info on the latter.

You also have Raymarine's ECI-100
https://www.raymarine.com/multifunct...acing/eci-100/

Good luck!

Unfortunately those are all CAN-bus for engines with digital controls.

The Yanmars in question here are pure mechanical controlled with nothing digital. Analogue gauges and senders.

Re: NMEA 2000 Engine Monitoring

I just delivered a boat repowered with a 2-3 year old Yanmar 4 cyl turbo, and it had a neat display on the B&G that gave all the engine data. The fuel consumption was in good agreement with what I measured. Its a sailboat, so I didn't look into the details, or spend hours staring at the display. I have come to the conclusion that saildrives get about 20% more fuel mileage than traditional shafts, because they don't waste energy pushing water down.

I looked extensively for my last boat. Unfortunately, the Actisense EMU-1 was the only thing I found still supported.

Re: NMEA 2000 Engine Monitoring

You don't have to cut the harness, just tap the panel meters for the items you want to monitor.

Ah, I didn't think of that. Thanks!

Re: NMEA 2000 Engine Monitoring

Here are some alternative N2K engine monitoring products:

Of course, the Actisense EMU is well-known.

Noland Engineering also produces an RS11 engine monitor: https://nolandeng.com/product/rs11-c...ata-converter/ .

There's the Alba-Combi system: https://www.albacombi.com/

Veratron recently announced a new sensor system that includes engine monitoring: https://www.veratron.com/marine/prod...iew/oceanlink/

And as it happens, Airmar is evidently going to get into the market as well with their "SmartBoat" system, as seen in a recent Panbo post: https://panbo.com/airmars-smartboat-...ce-management/ and https://www.airmar.com/productdescription.html?id=231

I honestly have zero experience with any of this stuff.

Re: NMEA 2000 Engine Monitoring

Here is a cheap option:

https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_fro...erter&_sacat=0

Here's a more expensive one. 10 channels customizable and with alarms, so expand to cover tanks as well as exhaust temp, raw water temp maybe.

https://digitalmarinegauges.com/seag...basic-edition/

They also do lots of useful sensors.

I was thinking of giving one a go. Can you customise the label of the messages? So to change oil temp to exhaust temp or water tank 2 to fuel tank 1 for example?

Hmm no I don’t think so the PGNS are fixed. It’s up to your display device if you can relabel

Anyone ever use one? How customizable are they? They seem to be pre-programmed for specific inputs (two fuel tanks, two water tanks, two waste tanks, etc.) But I have four fuel tanks. Not sure how I'd set that up. I could toggle between the two pair of tanks I'm currently using and the pair I'm not.
