Re: Sailing sayings
Yes, it's somewhat true. Go here and it will explain. Is “Red sky at night, sailor’s delight,Red sky in morning, sailor’s warning” true? Everyday Mysteries
Also watch out for mares tails and mackerel skies which indicate an approaching front.

Re: Sailing sayings
See brown, go aground works pretty good (bad) in the Caribbean. Which leads to the next saying:
Three types of sailors:
1. Those who have run aground
2. Those who are going to
3. Those who lie about it.
Sadly, I've run aground pulling into a slip in a marina.

Ohhh I like that!
I was taught several things when I started out:
"Don't sail where birds wade."
"Don't come into the dock any faster than you want to hit it."
"Go slow and aim for somethin' cheap!"
And my favorite docking slogan (made up by me)
"You ain't parkin' at Target, baby!"
As for the "red skies at night ..." that's what we had right before Isaac.

Re: Sailing sayings
Probably the most basic....Red-Green, go between.
He didn't forget to take his fenders in, he's washing them.
Green over white, trawling tonight.
Yellow over yellow, a pushing or hip towing fellow.
Red over white, fishing tonight.
Red white red, restricted ability ahead.
White over red, pilot ahead.
Red over red, pilot is dead.
Red over green, sailing machine
Yellow over white, my towline is tight.

Re: Sailing sayings
I too went aground going in to a slip in a marina. Took the turn a little too wide and went aground about 20 ft. in front of the bar where everyone sits to watch boats do fun stuff getting into and out of their slips.

The coldest hour of all the night,
Is the hour before daylight.
If on your starboard bow red do appear,
It is your duty to keep clear.
Green to Green, Red to Red,
Perfect safety, go ahead.

Re: Sailing sayings
Wind before rain, soon make sail again
Rain before wind your topsails mind.
Think this might refer to Ana and Kata cold fronts? or maybe it just means if the wind comes first it is probably just a squall with the falling rain causing the downburst.

I have found this one to be quite accurate. Down here in ITCZ squall-land I repeat in to myself every time one comes. Topsails = reef
