I'm a synthetic backer. Currently wear convertible, turn into shorts with a zipper on lower portion, cargo pants. The synthetic fabric does not soak up and hold water and it even sheds water with some material. Cotton soaks in water, holds onto it for dear life and begins to stink after a short time. People that think cotton dries out quickly are sailing on a different salty ocean than me.

What I do wish is if they made pants with built in or insertable knee pads. Even 1/4" foam would help a lot. I can no longer kneel on hard surfaces without pain and kneepads are always getting hooked on something or twisting or falling down so they aren't providing any padding where needed without constant rearranging.

Take a look at Railriders Eco Mesh or Bone Flats pants. Depending on the nature of your work these may fit the bill. They certainly do let a breeze through bit they come at a cost. I wear the adventure pants for backcountry work and can vouch for their toughness as mine are over 10 years old.

My spouse loves Coolibar, and it provides coverage and is not hot, but it is not really workwear.

I'm too old to wear tight jeans. I would probably be arrested for disturbing the natural environment.

Many versions of motorcycle jeans include this feature (insertable/removable knee pads) and also have kevlar lining in strategic areas. However, they are hot and not super comfortable to walk around in.

For example: https://joerocket.ca/products/mission-reinforced-jeans

And they aren't cheap.

Get the missus to sew large outside pockets on the knees with velcro tabs on the top then you can insert/remove pads as and when needed.

Terrific idea! And, there are multiple versions of knee pads available pretty much everywhere that would fit in the pocket.

Re: Pants me! What do you wear? Non boat related.

I bought some cotton and plastic shirts for sailing.

The plastic shirts are supposed to be athletic/sports, or some other term, meaning they do something for you when you are sweating. I have had these type of shirts before and find them very hot and uncomfortable when it is hot outside. They are great for winter use though, because they are warm, but useless for hot weather. Unless one likes being hotter and more miserable.

Cotton works. Yeah, it is wet, but it is hot and humid, and *** I *** am wet. But at least I am cooler than when wearing plastic.

Cotton in winter is a no no.

Later,
Dan

You can easily water proof them if you do glassing/repairing of 4 dive boats annually. Kinda stiff but waterproof. Sometimes Santa brings me Duluth pants.

Cool Re: Pants me! What do you wear? Non boat related.

I know this may sound crazy but I had a silk pair of pants made a seamstress friend...wonderfull
light, sunproof.... also linen worked well
the silk ones could be used in winter ... they are windproof
