Re: monohull vs multihull observation
I have sailed cats from beach cats to 54' cruising pigs.
I have sailed monos from Opti to Oy72 boats.
A cruising cat is a luxury car. A cruising mono is a mobile home that lists.
A racing cat is a sailing boat and a joy, and so is a racing mono.
If you are getting old, if you want stability, if you are rich, you get a cat.
If you are younger, like pissing everywhere but the toilet bowl, if you can't afford a cat, you get a mono.
Cruising cats are like cars, cruising monos are like motorbikes.
Sailing boats are like bikes, gliders, or terns. It takes a blind not to discern.
Cheers,
b.

Re: monohull vs multihull observation
What kind od sailing are you going to do ? day sail week sail haw many people for how long. Where Flat water Multi hull is best . Rough water mono hull is best !
You dont put mony into a boat unless it suits your needs . They are all pretty to some people. !

Re: monohull vs multihull observation
I think we are all secret cat lovers. But until the marinas and boatyards charge the same as a mono we will just have to pretend we hate cats.

Re: monohull vs multihull observation
You need to get yourself a trawler,
Don't even think about a sailing cat or mono

Next time I sail by a CD at twice the speed, sailing flat with one finger on the helm I’ll remember this post!

Totally ridiculous statement!
The Polynesians were sailing something much closer to a large beach cat compared to today's Condo on the water Catamarans
Also, the last thing you should want as an older person is a boat that is easy to sail with little motion as you sail it like a cruising cat.
Older folks need to move and work when sailing much more than when they were younger for obvious health reasons

Re: monohull vs multihull observation
I am yet to see a catamaran where you can sit and steer the boat and not be exposed to the elements I can stand behind my wheel on my yacht it can be pooring rain and I’m not even getting wet.

So can I, on my cat, a dogger/bimini over them helm does the trick.
There are a number of cats with steering stations inside the deckhouse. In my case, Ive got a 360 view from inside the deckhouse and an autopilot remote. I can sit inside and have a cup of coffee while on watch. Like a mono w a pilot house.
PS: I sail, and own, both cats & monos...no bias here.

Does that apply to the voyaging canoes referred to in this clip?
I don't think so.
Overall its like design of sports car vs family sedan - a well designed family sedan can still leave you "connected", a poorly designed sport car the opposite - it's not whether its got 2 hulls or 1 - its about the design.

Re: monohull vs multihull observation
I have sailed on both. If I could afford a cat I would buy one, especially if we were full time cruisers. So for now I will just tell myself how romantic it is, and that real sailors own monos. In reality it does not matter which you prefer, as long as you are sailing!!

Re: monohull vs multihull observation
It’s simple. Different strokes for different folks. What’s best for you, isn’t necessarily best for someone else. Get over it.
