Maxwell 800 Windlass Chain

Looking for 200' of anchor chain for our Maxwell 800 Windlass. Think it is 5/16 G4. Anyone know where to find it at a good price? Also need a new plough anchor for or 455 Cruisers motoryacht.

Do make sure you order the right chain since the correct fit is essential. In case you haven't already found this out, all 5/16 chain is not the same. 5/16 G4 fits a different gypsy than 5/16 BBB. If you aren't sure order a 1-2' sample piece to test.

Instead of a plow why not one of the new generation anchors. Much better and no more than a new plow. I like the Mantus but have an older Rocna as well.

One more thing, all the windlass makers I know offer different gypsy options on their windlasses so knowing the model number usually isn't sufficient. You need to check the model of just the gypsy to determine the correct chain. If you can find a number on the gypsy and contact Maxwell (or read the manual if you have it) you should be able to learn which size and type chain that will fit.

In my case I can use 3/8" BBB or 5/16 G4 in my windlass. The key is not the inch size of the metal in the link but how many links per foot that determines if the chain works in your gypsy or not. 3/8" G4 has longer links than 3/8" BBB so both won't work in the same gypsy.

All very confusing and I spent a few hours researching chain sizes, types, relative strength vs weight vs cost for different chains. For example I learned that 5/16 G4 is stronger, lighter and cheaper than 3/8" BBB.

As others have mentioned, you must buy a short-link (G4 or BBB) chain that fits your chainwheel/gypsy. or buy a new chainwheel (check availability before you buy the chain) to fit your new short-link chain. I don't need a windlass but if I did, I would look at Maxwell products...
