Re: Forum Content

The other thing that is assumed here is that all the information in the previous post's is the be all and end all to a question and there is nothing new left to learn on a subject. By newbies or the sages of the forum.

If the new poster did not post the question, but just searched and read previous answers and took them as it. A new member who may well have more up to date or different information on the subject would not get a chance to be involved in the discussion.

My only gripe with new posts is when no location information is available on the poster. This forum is truly international and post like "where is the best place" or "where does one get" do not mean much if we have no idea in which geographic location the poster is.

I don't think we should assume that at all. By far the majority of threads run their course. But if it's similar to what your looking for, why not re-open it and add on with your new, more specific or updated question. IMO, that would make the threads much more robust rather than having a bunch of half answered ones.

Re: Forum Content

Usually, when people have a question, whether it be an "x" needs fixing, or what kind of oil filter wrench to use, or a "tell me about line" type, they want to know NOW, and somehow think that would be quicker to get the answer, than checking through the archives. A different, more savvy search engine might help that one aspect.

Re: Forum Content

I hate to say this but some posts in this thread have a the vibe of things were better in the old days.

Not complaining but life changes us all. I have been here since 2010 and have read a lot more than I posted. Perhaps that's because my father taught me that, you can learn a lot more when you are not talking and are listening.

There are those that are desktop sailors and others that have dreams. Dreams are fine, just remember they are dreams. The posts about the changing attitudes and different perspectives of today vs the previous generation ring home for me. I was brought up to look for no one to support me, to make my own way in this world.

I have tried to instill that in my children as well. But as i look to sell a business I have spent 20 plus years building, a comment was made by a friend asking me if I was going to share the profits of my labors with my children. And there in lies the problem. Too many people expect life to be easy, to have things handed to them

And that bring us back to the dreamers

Funny enough they were great fun in the first couple of years.. got banned a few times and a few strikes..
Folks called '********' on stuff I said.. or had to Google for translations..
Also the boredom is with 'Me'.. one runs out of 'Swing that Lantern' tales after a few years of posting and the regulars get tired of 'How I anchor solo' or 'This is how to solo across the Atlantic'.. etc etc..
So now I just vary my stuff by occasionally winding folks up.. and having given up red wine I'm less caustic and argumentative... just another boring old fart..!!

A more interesting question is why the need to disparage someone new to sailing, or working in a cube, or who lives in a flyover state , just becasue we haven't reached your level of ability or knowledge? We're working on it and that's why we post on this forum.
I've been sailing for 6 years. I am still a green newbie. And 6 years ago I was a dreaming desk jockey. Now we are on our own boat in Mexico with tons and tons to learn. I guess it's best to not judge others by anything. We have met some great people here. Most have far more skills and experience than we do. Not one has ever been annoyed by our lack, instead they have just been encouraging and helpful.

The truth is, the content does not change here or in the real world. What changes is our knowledge or interest in helping others. Basically, if you are bored with "the same old stuff", you have outgrown the thread, forum, club or whatever.

That was not aimed at the person who wrote the quote -just adding to that comment.

The site doesn't seem to be fun anymore. 90% of the posters I knew are gone. Maybe I'm getting too old but I'm still cruising. It is no longer a cruisers forum.

Re: Forum Content

As a member of said generation I may be the exception as I didn't grow up with money, or in a bubble playing video games but rather outside in the woods, on the rivers and ocean. I progressed up to sailing from 20 years of paddling canoes and whitewater but sailing has always been a dream for as long as I can remember. Sailing 8 years in Se Alaska now.
I have also noticed a serious trend for young couples jumping feet first into boating and I also think a large part is due to YouTube channels such as LaVagabonde. I also think this is in part to the idea that they can make money by publicly funding their endeavor and personally drives me up the F'ing wall (No I don't have a Facebook account, twit-er blog or anything outside an email address) To take something so many people have a true passion for and try to capitalize on it cheapens the whole premise to me. I’ve recently come across two YouTube channels that proclaim ‘Sailing around the world with so and so…’ and they haven’t bought a boat yet nor have they ever owned one! (completed ASA 101 & 104 though) Yet they have designed a nifty logo and merchandizing that they sell on their website!!WTF? One recently hit closer to home when a couple here did just that, moved to Alaska bought a boat and are merchandizing the hull out of it; Even proposed to his wife (the same place I did to mine 7 years ago on our boat) except they videoed it and are making money off it. It’s like watching someone else cash in on my life in a way, kinda strange. That's my rant

Hint: you probably wouldn't have been playing in the woods if you had a decent computer with awesome High Def video games!

Also, when you got tired of the games porn is available also. so if you are a teenager of say 15 plus, you are pretty much set for the day

Rbk, I felt that way about the people profiting off their dreams or actual life style, until I realized I am simply envious of their forethought and willingness to do the work. Good for them!

Re: Forum Content

In the last 4 years I have read every thread posted on this site but I signed up to respond to this one. I have wanted this lifestyle every since my mom rowed me to shore to catch the schoolbus. I am close to realizing that dream with a modest boat and a modest lifestyle. This will be my home and I cant afford to be wrong. I have come value this site as a source of information but recently information is harder to come by. As an outsider I see alot of " cant decide on the 67 or the 70 footer to singlehand" or " Thinking about buying my first boat in 3 years" and 3 weeks later giving advice on the proper tension of the ... on a 1977 .... Anyway here is my point at last. I value and need the knowledge that you delivery captains, liveaboards, shipwrights etc.. have and I emplore you not to lose heart and turn the site back into what you want it to be. Thank You. Wayne

Have you sailed in the ocean yet?

Have you been seasick while having to go forward and work on a jammed roller furler? One good thing when being up forward and seasick is that you can easily blow chunks downwind and keep working!

Do you like the smell of low tide in the morning?

Have you been awakened at zero dark thirty by some jackass that wanted an early start to the day and "waked" you?

I'm not picking on you btw, I'm just pointing out some things

Good luck in you endeavour (sp?) I'm thinking of the sailboat

Don't forget, if it is low tide and muddy, marshy there may be some oysters or clams available....

There are ways around all these example btw so hang in there
