Re: First trip :) valiant 40

I thought for a moment you were sailing at the equator and that's why the photos were 90 degrees off. Nice boat, congrats!

First trip :) valiant 40

Just wait until you get her out in 15 knots anywhere but on the nose. Fly the staysail if wind is anywhere forward of the beam. Makes a big difference In speed and pointing given the enormous foretriangle size of the boat.

If I were you I would look into that overheating issue right away. I’d do a cooling system acid flush and take out the heat exchanger and pressure test it, as well as the thermostat. If you’re getting saltwater into the freshwater side through a perforated exchanger if can get expensive very quickly if you don’t take care of it.

Good advice. It can be easy for the enthusiasm of all the other stuff to allow the motor issue to end up on the back burner, so to speak.

Beautiful boat!

I'm so glad to hear that your first outing went well.

Love her up and enjoy!

Yes, the overheating issue is our #1 issue right now, even though it never happened I am still investigating it. Plus the exhaust has a leak so it compounds that problem, I'm not a fan of carbon monoxide poisoning lol.

We had the prior captain and the surveyor as well I believe say it was due to the exhaust design on the westerbeke 40 that causes the issue. So I am getting my brother to fabricate a new stainless exhaust system that will address the flow issues, to help address that aspect as well. I am lucky though because my brother is a red seal welder and a red seal metal fabricator, so I am immensely thankful for that otherwise the dollars would be stacking thick soon.

The thermostat seemed steady on the trip over, but double checking it is wise and a flush and full engine service is planned.

In my house, how we grew up, is that you make sure she runs perfectly and reliably before you make her look pretty. So yep, she does not look so hot right now, but I am dropping dollars into her so that we can always get home.

RR

P.s I'm afraid to answer the comments regarding how fun she will be once the sails open lest I buy another plane ticket just to find out personally i am excited to get out again lol

I have the same problem with my iphone. However, after downloading them to the pc, I open them up in Microsoft Paint and save again cropping and reducing if required. Sorts the problem out.

No idea what the solution is if you use an ipad.
