Sink or swim.

Gentlemen don't sail to weather.

Will someone please explain to me the origin and meaning "Gentleman don't sail to weather". Spilled cocktails, wrong Yacht Club, Elitist Sea- sickness? How do you even make the weather mark on a Yale Regatta Course. Please enlighten me.

So far as I know, it is because "ladies" don't care for being seasick. Therefore the gentlemen don't sail to windward when milady is on the boat. Does not apply to any form of racing, even by the very wealthy in a country where they have lords and ladies.

For cruising sailors it varies, some consider it a joke. Others think it refers to vessels that have difficulty sailing to windward and therefore crash into the waves under power. The differences come from folks with and without racing backgrounds prior to cruising.

Green to green & red to red
All is well, go ahead
When in danger, or in doubt
Run in circles, scream & shout.

Marriages performed by the skipper of this vessel are good for the duration of the voyage.

If it didn't already pass your lips, it doesn't belong in the head.

2 is one, 1 is none
Translation - I value redundancy in ships systems.

The last thing I do when leaving the boat is check the seacocks & the bilge pumps.

Thank you Anne,

Still doesn't really answer the question for me nor do I think it would explain it to Jean Socrates, Cole Bauer or a few other sailors.

Has always and still does perplex me to rule out half the fun.

These rules are not a joke and are really important on boats where you have to go forward to reef, and it takes some time.

Not so relevant for in-mast furling boats where you can reef and unreef in a second and from the cockpit and continuously adjust sail area if necessary.
