Re: California bans the sale of Denatured Alcohol

I was thinking exactly this ^^^ Point of interesting fact is that California is the 5th largest GDP in the world. No other state and none of the 97% of other countries can say this. But, hey, we all jump to the negatives. It's just human nature. I too find it appalling that we can't tackle our homeless and mental health crisis. My son also might be moving to Southern California and I immediately told him to be aware of gang activity because I had read about or seen it on some TV show. I realized I had no idea what I was talking about. Didn't stop me though from being a concerned smothering hen....it's just how we do.

Re: California bans the sale of Denatured Alcohol

Not everywhere has a "homeless people" problem. Even in some of the less wealthy countries. California probably has more due to two separate causes. When Reagan dismantled the mental health care facilities, many of those people wound up on the streets. There was an influx of PTSS veterans, who also did not have adequate VA care. Second, the climate of California is adequately mild for life to be sustainable out of doors all year.

Mix that in with drug use and abuse, and add years of fetal alcohol syndrome and methamphetamine and cocaine abuse children, and the mentally disadvantaged have increased terrifically, at the time historically when there is less of a safety net for them.

It is a tragedy, in human terms.

Re: California bans the sale of Denatured Alcohol

The bottom line in the Los Angeles area is that denatured alcohol has disappeared from all stores. Hardware stores, West Marine, etc. I ordered Regal Flame Premium Ventless Bio Ethanol Fireplace Fuel from Amazon instead. It arrived without a delay. So far I am pleased with it in my Origo 6000 stove:

The MSDS says 90%+ bioethanol, <1% denatonium benzoate used as a bitterant. It smells way less than Sunnyside denatured alcohol that I used before, seems to produce less CO2 (my CO alarm, next to the stove never went above 45 while before it would shoot up to 114) and seems to burn hotter than before. It takes me 5:30 min to boil water for two cups of tea (16 oz) vs. 6:30 min on a 1000W electric plate. I can't remember how long it took with denatured alcohol but it seemed slower.

For now I am happier than before. May be it was a good move to ban denatured alcohol, otherwise I would have never discovered bioethanol.

Re: California bans the sale of Denatured Alcohol

In reality California is two or three states. Northern California and the deserts are one. Southern and San Francisco are are the other.

Southern California and San Francisco require a nanny state. The people there don't have the intelligence/ common sense to live together.

The rest of California can figure it out on their own at a locL level.

Unfortunately that's not how the government is set up.

Huh? Ok I know I said it’s ok to beat up on California, but we don’t have the intelligence to live together? I’m trying to figure out what that means.

The more rural areas don't need micromanaging.

Over population in the city and urban areas require a different viewpoint.

The folks in Silicon Valley who are literally responsible for inventing and implementing almost everything that was required for you to just send that ignorant comment around the world "don't have intelligence"? Okey dokey then.

Actually most of the interaction of the internet was built by the guys in the San Fernando valley - the porn industry brought images, streaming, search engine marketing and interactive media.

Re: California bans the sale of Denatured Alcohol

But my issue wasnt that silicone valley or urban politicians were wrong. Just that the state was so large that dense population areas couldn't be manage the same as northern California or the desert aread

Ok, I’ll bite. Are California’s cities somehow more in need of this micromanagement, which I am not sure what you mean there, than any other large city in the nation?

California bans the sale of Denatured Alcohol

Bio ethanol? Really?
Isn’t all ethanol Bio?
Want to bet it’s just corn Ethanol? Slap Bio and Organic on it and sell it for twice as much.
I looked it up, usually sold by the quart for about $15 a quart.

Same place, search alcohol paint thinner, it’s about half the price for denatured alcohol.

Reminds me of Vegan Leather, yes there really is such a thing.

But then Vegan Leather is WAY more expensive than Naugahyde.

Don

First I respect your posts.

The argument was placed prior in this thread that due to the large population the draws on resources caused a lot of regulations to be placed. I concede this point. Especially in southern California.

Large populations and limited resources = more regulations.

I've found other places to live (ensenada mx or hilo hi) with similar weather and less regulation.

P0rn is always an early-adopter of new media.

Gutenberg's first printing project might have been the Bible, but I can guess what was coming off the press pretty soon after.

Re: California bans the sale of Denatured Alcohol

Ok well, hot off the press, west marine in Oxnard has plenty on the shelf. The salesman was telling me it may be a county by county thing because mineral spirits are not available in Ventura county but they are in LA county. Go figure. So for now, at least west marine here has no clue why there’s news of a ban.
