Finding Denatured alcohol in Luperon, DR

Does anyone know where I can find denatured alcohol in the Dominican Republic. We are staying in Luperon for the 2014 hurricane season. We have been to Santiago to the two hardware stores with no luck. Then, my husband went to Puerta Plata and bought the best thing he could find (can't remember what he said it was) but it doesn't work. We are currently using an old portable Homestead 2-burner stove, but are considering getting an Origo 6000 Non-Pressurized 2-Burner Alcohol Stove With Oven. (He refuses to use propane,so let's not discuss that issue). Would appreciate any advice!

Consider changing to pressure kerosene as it burns hotter and goes a long way and in my opinion is safer.

Ask for "alcohol para quemar" - literally alcohol for burning. Also "alcohol metílico" (methyl alcohol). If the hardware store doesn't have it then try the pharmacy (farmacia) but be prepared for higher prices as it will be pharmaceutical grade.

Kerosene is a better solution than alcohol as it burns hotter. However you would still need a little alcohol to preheat the burner so no win there. These days I think the best alternative is diesel [Edit: alternative to propane]. For yachts in the tropics the Dickinson pot burners are just too hot but Wallis (of Finland) makes high-tech diesel stovetops and ovens that don't heat up the cabin more than other fuels.

Remember in Spanish the "h" is silent so that the word "alcohol" is pronounced al co OL with the accent on the last syllable

Its not easy to buy in the DR because a lot of people were drinking it and dying. Pharmacy is the best bet, but it will be expensive.
Sent from an undisclosed location on the high seas or from the lounge chair by the pool, you decide.
