Re: Henri, What are you all doing.

In eastern Long Island, we are getting increasingly concerned about Henri paying us a visit. Our boat is in a very sheltered marina, but I am going down this afternoon to put on an extra dockline, tie a line around the genoa to keep it from unfurling (or remove it altogether; haven't decided yet), and put an anchor on the seaward side so that it is not blown towards the fixed dock. And to recheck everything. My biggest worry is the storm surge, especially since the astronomical predicted sides are very high in the next few days with the full moon.

Re: Henri, What are you all doing.

I’m out of the water this season, on jackstands. I don’t think it’ll be bad at all.

Just make sure you drop and stow your furled headsails and canvas, and mind your chafe gear. When TS/CAT1 storms come through here, two things get boats:

Roller furled headsails deploying, and mooring lines chafing through.

Re: Henri, What are you all doing.

While uncertain, NOAA has nudged the landfall point west, to somewhere between Cape Cod and NYC.

While the strength forecast is minimal, Cat 1, given the recent historical underestimating of short-term intensity gains, I'm guessing it gets up to strong Cat 1 or weak to medium Cat 2, though at landfall it may have already started declining in strength.

More important is the timing of the arrival, and one's position relative to the eye at landfall, as there are about 3-6 foot tides on the arrival date.

We're currently anchored in Block Island, RI. We're heading to RI @ 0600 to a well protected slip well upriver. The river there is very narrow with hills on both banks.

Re: Henri, What are you all doing.

Well, the remnants of Fred gave us a wet 24-hour period already. We're much farther East than the forecast landfall now, but when it starts heading East again we're in the bulls-eye for the Storm or Depression that remains. Still taking it seriously; the marina we were supposed to be at for two days is allowing us to extend that until the storm passes, so we're very fortunate. It doesn't have hurricane-hole level protection, but hopefully we won't need that. It'll be better than fighting for a spot in one of the few well-enough protected anchorages around here.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the folks on Long Island and the Sound. Hang in there!!

One of the Forum Members is currently in a harbour off Buzzard's Bay and he is hauling today (meant to haul yesterday, but apparently there was a cardiac event at the marina which fouled up the haul sched....)

T,

After seeing a Code 0 with a line around it come loose from a 50' Hanse and flog itself to death on July 1st, (in 25-knot winds) I would suggest you make a point of taking it down altogether.

Best wishes,

Re: Henri, What are you all doing.

On South Shore of LI. Took down Genoa. Wrapped main and cover with additional line, Collapsed Bimini and wrapped it, Extra lines to pilings. The challenge is allowing for tidal rise. Fingers crossed.

Removal all sails and the Bimini. There is no reason to leave them out in the wind.

Re: Henri, What are you all doing.

We're in Shelter Island. Standard procedure: Remove all canvas: sails, dodger, etc. Remove anchor from roller - don't want any chafe on the mooring pennant. Drop the boom and secure the end. All halyards secured both ends.
No loose ends, no lashings that might come loose, minimum windage.
Remove dodger frame and stow below.
Take pictures just in case there's an insurance issue....hate to bring this one up, but...
