Image attached. This is the routing choice screen.

My set up:

- the boat is at wp 'boat',
- I have a wpt '1' some distance off the boat,
- I have a wpt 'destination' further off, this is my end point.

I tried to make them up into a route and then ask the software to calculate routing over the route but it did not work for me.

Selecting as shown in the image did not work either.

So I am puzzled about this part of the GUI as to how it is supposed to be used.

Thanks and regards,
b.

Ah ok.

This is called routing on a pathway. You must first define a pathway (from the pathway menu, select pathway->add a pathway). Then you can create POIs where you want them, edit them and add them in the pathway. You can either choose to have them ordered alphabetically or with a sequence number. A POI can belong to several pathways. Then you should see the pathway drawn with lines and arrows. More info in the documentation around page 64.

Re: Free Routing Software. qtVlm

Big thanks! I will try this method in a moment. If I am stuck with anything I will diggg deeper into the manual.

Thanks! Great job!

Re: Free Routing Software. qtVlm

As announced a few posts above, qtVlm version 5.5.0 is now entering final tests phase, and supports S57 charts (ENCs). If some of you want to have a look and eventually make suggestions for improvements before we release officially, the links for the beta version (Windows/Mac/Linux) are here: qtVlm 5.5.0 beta

Thanks

Re: Free Routing Software. qtVlm

A feature request:

Could you possibly implement a new method of optional display of the wind arrows?

I have seen excess arrows deleted and only the ones over the track AND specific for the moment the boat is at a given point of the track remain on the screen. Say 'arrow declutter' feature. Except the remaining arrows are not all from one time slot but rather a selection of arrows from very many time slots.

I earlier mentioned it in this thread:

http://www.cruisersforum.com/forums/...ys-182195.html

At posts #10 and at #11 are some examples.

I use your software now along MaxSea and I love to see where your development goes. Very well done.

Thank you!

Re: Free Routing Software. qtVlm

Hmm why not, but to be honest I am not a big fan of this kind of display. I'll see if some other would like something like that.
In the mean time, what you can do in qtVlm:
- Of course you can tune wind arrows size and density (through the windsock icon)
- You can also ask the routing module to display grib over isochrons. That wont show you arrows but it's useful to see immediately where (and why) it wants you to go.
- Once converted in a route, you can move your mouse over the route, and you will see all the data available at this point and time (tws, twa, waves, currents, awa, and much more).
- The route's log book also show you at the first column a wind arrow on your boat.

Re: Free Routing Software. qtVlm

Yep. No point doing things for one marginal user.

The visual representation discussed has the benefit of showing all route and expected conditions in one fixed image - no need to scroll forward / backward thru the grib file.

To me, this would be a power feature, but sure my use is atypical.

I am at 5.4.9 will upgrade to the newest later today. Again thanks for all your work.

Re: Free Routing Software. qtVlm

qtVlm version 5.5.1 that supports S57 charts has been officially released a few days ago on all platforms, including Android and iOS.

For Mac/iOS users it displays these maps (and others, btw) using retina if available on the machine.

Fair winds to all.

o-charts are designed for open-cpn only, as far as I know.

Re: Free Routing Software. qtVlm

Can you tell us more on this?

It seems a mistake to develop a closed circuit thing for an open source project.

How are they for OpenCPN only?

Re: Free Routing Software. qtVlm

As far as I am aware has the S57 key Methode been aligned to o-charts and there were many issues with W10 autoupdates. Seem all resolved now, that's why I was hoping maitai may engage them also for qrvlm. Maybe more nonsailingtime is needed for research 🤔🤔🤔

Re: Free Routing Software. qtVlm

I am not sure I understand the question:
qtVlm can read non-encoded (non-protected) S57 charts (also called ENCs). For instance ENCs available at NOAA for US (free) or S57 charts available at SHOM for France (not free but not encoded). It works on all platforms including iOS and Android, and I don't see where W10 updates come to play.

As far as I know O-Charts are encrypted, like S63 charts. We might implement S63 charts one day, I don't know for o-charts (= It is clearly stated at o-charts website that these charts are meant for and only for ocpn, which is understandable).

Re: Free Routing Software. qtVlm

oupps - mea culpa - maitai you are of course right. I had confused S57 and S63 and my comments with W10 were obviously related to S63 charts.

On the o-chart web site it states for ocpn, as you say, but I was hoping that you may be in contact with them to enable/modify/integrate the o-charts plugin so that o-charts could get used in qtVlm. Afterall their commercial interest is in selling the charts and not to limit usage to ocpn.

As you said - its early days with o-charts but their offering is expanding and attraktiv

There has always been a relaxed professional and helping relationship between these two fine opensource programs. Who knows what the possibilities are in the future.
