Re: Free Routing Software. qtVlm

Hello all

Version 5.4.2 has been posted, it includes quite a few new cool features, but that is not my point (see help menu for the list).

The big race "Vendée Globe" is just about to start. Android and iOS qtVlm complete versions are free on this race (free = 0.0$, no advertising or whatever).

A good opportunity to challenge your routing skills, all are welcome. It will be tough.

Thanks. But where?

It would be very useful when you notify updates to have a link to the download page.

Re: Free Routing Software. qtVlm

I know the "polars" issue and how/where to get the figures has been discussed befor - mainly for mono hulls though.
Can anyone point me to a source for Multihull polar charts for e.g. Lagoon 380 or 410 ?

I appreciate that sea state has a greater influence with multihulls - how do you handle this within qtVlm? prepare different polar files or are there also grib files for wave-height available?

Re: Free Routing Software. qtVlm

Hello,

For the lagoon I found this:
https://www.bateaux-antilles.fr/site...polarchart.pdf
Polaire du LAGOON 52 (Suite…) | CAT'LEYA
http://www.cata-lagoon.com/site_agen...olaire_400.pdf

Only images, but it shouldn't take long to input the data in a spreadsheet.

Concerning waves, qtVlm knows can only avoid areas with waves over a certain height. We know what to do to improve this, and I hope soon we will implement something that will apply a correction on polar speed, based on sea state and waves. Just a matter of finding time to do it...

Many gribs contain waves data, WW3 for instance, that you can get from saildocs (menu->qtVlm->Configuration->grib to see what kind of data is available)

Cheers,
Philippe.

Re: Free Routing Software. qtVlm

I am sorry I could not make the Virtual Vendee this year, but would like to mention that Sean has lots of polars in the the install for weather_routing plugin for opencpn. They are likely compatible with gtVlm. Have not noticed how many multihull polars are in the set.

Any chance someone can Zip these polars and put them somewhere to download for me?

Thanks,

Carsten

Re: Free Routing Software. qtVlm

Here you are, have also included the polar for Lagoon380 from the doc Maitai was kind enough to point me to. File is a zip file not a .doc - just had to rename it be able to upload.

@Maitai: I notice option to set perfomance vs polar in tack/gybe to e.g 80% for crank. For multihulls it would be desirabel to distinguish between tack and gybe as difference is significant. Has anyone else raised this requirement or am I too detailed?

Cheers - Freddie

I take a note for your suggestion about tacking/gybbing. Not the first time I'm asked for that to be honest

Re: Free Routing Software. qtVlm

I'm just starting to look at using qtVLM for the route planning for our upcoming Indian Ocean crossing and I'm very impressed so far.

However, have a problem with RTOFS currents. As a test, I'm trying to plan a route from North West Madagascar to Richards Bay in South Africa. I'm obtaining GFS and RTOFS from saildocs. The GFS is 14 days and I'm putting that in Grib slot 1. The RTOFS is going into Grib 2 slot.

Unfortunately, the RTOFS is only for 5 days so I think that this means that on a 12 day passage the ocean currents aren't being used by qtLVM for the last 7 days of the passage. This is actually where the currents are strongest and significant.

I've noticed that the ocean currents in the Madagascar Channel don't vary significantly from day to day, so a work-around might be to take day 5 from the RTOFS grib file and copy it to Days 6 - 14....

Any comments or suggestions? Anyone know of any Windows based tools to allow me to manipulate GRIB files?
