Thank you for that information. Just downloaded and installed, but i am not sure what the software is about. It asks for a login and the only device wich can be configured is the port of the NMEA emulator .
Looks like a program for weather routing for virtual sailing?!?

Re: Free Routing Software
It is actually primarily designed for virtual sailing. But it can be configured to be used offline with a real boat (connected to a GPS or not if the position of the boat is set manually). Then the main problem is to get/build a correct polar for your specific boat.

You name it! I am struggling with my old logbook entries and making wild guesses to get some polar data. Will have to collect more data for sure, but at least i have a good starting point.

Re: Free Routing Software
I downloaded this stuff. It downloads grib files fine and displays them. It looks like something to track a fleet.
Will give it another try later today.
Anybody giving it a shot pls update what it is and how we can benefit.
Is there a gps gate in it (???)
Cheers,
b

I don't have the prog at hand right now, but there is GPS Port to be configured under "options" or "preferences", if i recall it correctly.

Re: Free Routing Software
Can't see it there. It seems like this software is more a tracking than a routing tool.

It is actually quite easy. Some software will do it for you. MaxSea will, e.g. convert an xls stored data into a series polar.
I am struggling here a bit:
- can't find the gps socket (minor issue, pos can be stored manually),
- can't get wave data in the grib.
It is a beautiful grib with upper air and whistles but in the cruising aspect it pays to adjust for wave action too.
Cheers,
b.

Re: Free Routing Software
Hello b,
you are right about MaxSea, but it is not really inexpensive, isn't it? Right now i think about collecting NMEA data an analyze it. Anyways ...
I've attached two pics to show you where i found GPS settings in QtVlm.
There is an other very nice and free program when it comes to weather and gribs. It is called "weather assistant", you can download it from Marine Weather for free. I've mailed the developer and he told me, that the prog is still under development. There is a handbook to download as well ad i have to admit, that i love this tool.

Re: Free Routing Software
In fact this is not the correct way to configure the GPS. Actually this option is for posting NMEA data to another software... The opposite way let's say.
The correct way is to define a real boat and not a virtual (vlm) boat at start. Then you will be asked for a gps com port.
I am actually one of the developper of this thing, so feel free to ask if you wish

Cool. We love having developers drop by.
Check out the OpenCPN sub-forum if that interests you. It's where the main discussions take place for the developers for that package. The more the merrier.

Thank you for your time and efforts you've put into programming. Now, that i've defined a real boat this whole thing makes much more sense .
My boat is in winter storage right now and all i have is some recorded NMEA data, that i can feed to the s/w via VSPE. So far, it looks very fine
