121 # Rocna and 54 Bruce. The 74# CQR is a spare in the bilge. It always set in good conditions but seemed to be a challenge when we needed it to set right now.

you won't be sorry. we've been doing florida/bahamas for the past ten years on our current boat. have used danforth, bruce, and cqr. nothing beats our new gen anchor - a manson supreme.

figure on 120 to 150 feet of all chain. don't forget to rig a snubber after you're anchored. you will be anchoring in ten feet or thereabouts most of the time. i've yet to use more than 100 feet of chain. we have a 45 lb manson supreme and a 35 lb hitensile danforth as a backup, but have never deployed the backup yet.

there's a good thread going on right now called 'top ten suggestions for tropical sailing'. you might want to check it out - lots of good advice.

There is a huge difference between a Bruce and a "Bruce" ie. a copy. The copies do not work well. The original does, but, whatever, we like ours, it's proven itself, we sleep well.

A real bruce is difficult to find - but infinitely better than the copies.

New generation - take your pick they all will hold most anything. Fortress for the stern/kedge.

I have Bruce onthe bow and a Fortress for the stern. I'll be getting a Rocna later this year.

Good of you to start an anchor thread - we were all getting a little bored and needed a good discussion

Your next topic could be about guns

Why, how, post a study link as I've never seen it other than on a forum and we all know that all forum posts are facts otherwise it wouldn't be allowed to be on the internet

I have no experience with the Bruce but it stays in my mind as a possible second anchor as it would fit on my bow next to my MS primary.

I see that you sail a small boat. Many of us have in the past and perhaps the future.

Regardless of boat size, this is absolutely the worst logic I have ever heard on any of the meandering anchor threads, and by far the worst idea about choosing an anchor, ever.

You might want to read my earlier post on one of the frirst pages:

What's your ENTIRE boat worth to you.

Heck, even CQRs are better than this approach.

Sorry to offend, but it's terrible and poor idea.

Wanna know how I really feel about it?

31' Grampian Classic.
single-hander.
and I need a good anchor - and one that does well on all chain.

but is it Fortress? a Manson? or something else that I haven't seen posted?

am sure this is not the way to go about kitting out one's boat, but I know nothing, and you all know everything... so just choose.

please.
We like the Rocna anchors, but of course what you need will depend on where you're sailing / what kind of bottoms you'll encounter.

right on stu. the best anchor you can buy (not afford, BUY) is the cheapest insurance policy you'll ever own. when you're dragging into the rocks you won't be thinking about how much money you saved on your anchor and chain.

get a big new gen anchor and a chain rode. right after buying the best and biggest bilge pump you can find....

WOW Stu, fear mongering isn't really helpful. I'm suprised you have a Catalina if you think only the best will do, or maybe you just don't know any better. The Delta is very close in performance to the second generation anchors in all the unbiased tests I have seen. I have used one thousands of nights without incident and I can assure you so have a lot of others.

Good point. We used the Delta as our primary anchor for years and only drug once in a 50 kt blow. We had the Manson Supreme for two years and drug twice. Both times with about a 50 kt wind, anchored in grass and a 180 degree wind shift. I would still probably go back with the Manson, but no doubt the Delta is also a great choice. Guess I've been drinking the Kool-Aid!
