Re: How many anchors do you carry?

On my 20,000lb 43ft monohull

I Carry:

1 Bruce 29kg (44lb) (normal anchor)
1 Bruce 30KG (66lb) (storms, deployed twice in 35 years)
1 large Fortress 27lb while racing this is the only bower I carry
1 smaller Fortress 15lb or so, stern anchor
1 5lb Bruce for the dingy

Total 5

Chain 300ft 5/16 HT
Rode 300ft 5/8 nylon

These anchors have held satisfactorily in all situations and bottoms all around the world for a few decades.

Re: How many anchors do you carry?

There were 5 anchor on my boat when I bought it.

The PO had left the boat near here after a two years cruise South.

I have added one new anchor which is a 25 lb. Mantus M1 in 2022.

I used his CQR for the first 11 years I owned the boat, and it saved me and the boat many times since I repeatedly picked exposed spots to anchor.

Many times I'd get onshore winds off the ocean at strengths of 25 knots or so whiled anchored 50-70 yards off the beach.

Re: How many anchors do you carry?

32' 10k# Sloop

On the bow -
22# Genuine CQR with 30' chain & 200' line
33# Genuine Bruce with 50' chain & 200' line

Put Away Down Below -
Guardian G-11 (slightly undersized) with 15' chain & 100' line

The CQR gets used 90% of the time. The same anchor & chain were used by a 35' sister ship in the islands for 3 months straight with no issues. If I loose the CQR, I will probably get a Mantus or a Rockna. As long as the CQR keeps working, I will keep using it. I do not have a windlass, so that prevents me from getting larger/heavier ground tackle.

Glad to hear I'm not the only one that has more in anchors than in ballast

Re: How many anchors do you carry?

For the requested census: We carry 6 anchors [and 7 rode assemblies; 2 live on the double gypsy windlass] on our 22 ton cruising weight, 43 ft staysail ketch.

We frequent remote areas, and have lost anchors before…

Read our ground tackle inventory page if you want more details- including decision/ choice reasoning, etc.

Cheers, Bill

Re: How many anchors do you carry?

3 on my previous boat (30' Peterson mono) and 4 on my current Crowther 10.

1. Sarca Excel which replaced the CQR as the bower.
2. CQR
3. Danforth but thinking of upgrading to a fortress
4. Fishermans

I have a spare CQR in the garage.

An interesting thread to read.

Stick with the danforth in my experience the steel danforth digs in faster and deeper than the aluminum of the fortress .

Re: How many anchors do you carry?

We carry 2. An oversized Mantus on 100m of chain that lives on the bow and a Fortress FX-37 on 30' of chain and 200' of line that we use as a stern anchor. Keeping in mind that if you "lose" your anchor to a snag you also lose a good portion of your rode, we attach a 20 meter length of floating line to the hoop of the Mantus when anchoring in deeper water. We then tuck the end into a couple of chain links about 18 meters from the anchor. This way if the anchor is stuck we can easily retrieve it and the most I will have to dive is a few meters. We carry a hookah so retrieval in shallower water is not a problem.

Using a trip line marker bouy saves all that wet diving and let's everyone know where your anchor is

marker buoys are the new guns and anchor threads! I happen to agree, but we are the outliers I think! Of course there are ways to rig trip lines that come back to the boat instead of to a buoy for those who want to save their ground tackle, avoid diving and avoid setting a buoy. Sure, you may not need one for years, but when you need one you are definitely glad it's there.

Stopped more than one idiot from anchoring over me and inside of my scope.

Re: How many anchors do you carry?

A trip line is definitely useful to deploy for special circumstances, but not for routine anchoring, and certainly not to mark where your anchor is. There is absolutely nothing wrong with other boats swinging within, or over, your anchor. In fact, this is the only way to allow the most people to use a limited space.

A marker buoy for an anchor creates a hazard for other boaters, and yourself. Like deploying multiple anchors, it is a tool that is useful in certain circumstances, but is not a good idea for general usage.
