How Many have Tenders that Consume more Fuel than the Mother Ship?

It's funny, our 43ft boat churns along at 5-6kn drinking 2-3 litres of diesel per hour, my new tohatsu 9.9 s stroke for the tender consumes considerably more... Just wrong!

So how many of you are guilty of having tenders that consume far more fuel than the mother ship?

It's kinda hard to compare a slow speed diesel, to a high speed gas engine !! but there all that way !! Ive never had an outboard, 4 stroke or 2 stroke, that got any type of fuel mileage! I don't think anyone really has ! But it's so darn hard to get the big boat up to the beach !!!

I second slow down, Midrange RPM is much better for fuel consumption.

my dink uses oars or sail. I don't have a motor for it.

That's almost exactly what my Tohatsu 9.8 4S uses at WOT, I cruise at 5kt at just over 1/2 throttle and use 1/2 gal/hr. Is yours a 2S?

At cruising speeds our 4 stroke outboards (Honda 20s) use about 2 litres/hour.

The 18 hp 2 stroke dinghy motor is a different story however.

Reading that again I see it says "s Stroke"...I'm betting that means 2 Stroke and yeah...they suck it up. 50% more according to Tohatsu. In this case it's not lighter either...so what made you choose the 2Stroke?

Yes, we do.
We have a Tohatsu 6HP 4 stroke on a 9’ 2” rib dingy with a 3.1 gallon gas tank. If we use it at half throttle or less it will last us 6 months.

Slowing down is the key to saving fuel in a dingy

Re: How Many have Tenders that Consume more Fuel than the Mother Ship?

Astrid, our dink has oars and sails but we do have a little outboard that we have used a time or two! Mostly we row, unless we are gonna be in an anchorage for 3 or 4 days then it's worth setting up the sails and such !

Me too. The old 2 stokes are bombs and always work. I have had a 1988 model to this day and never been in shop or any issue what so ever. Just run good clean fresh water thru it, change plugs every 2 -3 years, and run dry before storage.
