Boom Furler issues

Hi all, has anybody have or seen an older style boom furler? We believe it's an old Hoods model, the drive yoke is cracked and seems from engineering people that it's unrepairable, so does anyone know where I could look for a replacement secondhand or new, desperate.

Cheers Rod.

Re: Boom Furler issues

Wow. 150 people on the forum have looked at your post, and no one has an answer for you. I'm sorry. I've looked at the pictures, too, and yep, not much chance of repairing that (looks like maybe someone tried). Even worse, it looks like the crack does not go to the outside, so putting a steel collar around it won't hold it together.

Does Hood admit to having made it? That's a thin straw to grasp, but then it's start over time.

Re: Boom Furler issues

If no spare parts are available, ask if a local machine shop can make a new part.

Re: Boom Furler issues

Thanks for the replies guy's, we are searching the globe for this part, yes Hoods here in Aus says it's one of theirs, Hoods Stoway boom furler, but no parts avaliable, had a quote for a new to be made and I fell over, $3000
you gotta be dreaming, I did find a machine shop that was willing to repair it, it hasn't been repaired before, and it looks ok but we will be very nervous about the part in question in the future, must be one somewhere so keep searching, never give up.

Kind regards Rod Lewis.

Surprised, but not surprised, on the cost to make a new one. Will Hood give you a copy of the plans to make the part? I would think the would lower the fabrication cost.

Good Luck,
Dan

Re: Boom Furler issues

There are no plans available but I do have a broken down drawing of the furler, just spent 3 months in a shed for a refit and upon re-steping the rig found this issue, very disappointing.

Kind regards Rod Lewis

Re: Boom Furler issues

Maybe take it back to the machinist and ask if they can machine a set of “ears” on a flat plate that you could then attach to the plastic backing with all the teeth?
I believe it’s the teeth that would be so expensive to machine.
I doubt that welding the plastic or using an adhesive will be a permeant repair.

Re: Boom Furler issues

You might try a forge to see how much it would cost to cast one.

What material is the hub/fork made out of? Aluminum? Cast iron? Unobtainium? ;^)

Seeing that it is aluminium you need to search out a good alloy welder , or perhaps two and ask about repair. Should be eminently doable.

Re: Boom Furler issues

That's a tough spot. As I see it you've got a few options if you can't find a used one. As previously mentioned.....

1. If the AL grade is weldable and the part is not bent, gouge and weld up the cracks.

2. If the part is not bent, have a casting poured sans the ear holes (to make it easy) and then re bore holes.

3. Machine the internal ring gear off and attach to a new hub with ears.

Re: Boom Furler issues

Agree, it looks to be sand cast, so find a *really* good welder and let them weld it up. they will need to experiment with the filler rod since they are a couple of types of aluminum alloy for casting.

If the welder doesn't say "yep, I can weld that"... keep looking for a better welder.

I would think it would have been die-cast - and if it's not weldable, it could probably be used as a plug for investment casting (lost wax) a replacement.

DB, If your search is exhausted. My inclination would be this>

EigenVector,
3. Machine the internal ring gear off and attach to a new hub with ears.

Bolt that old gear to a newly fabricated SS or aluminum component. Days work to do a nice proper job.
That's a crappy casting and not surprised. It did last a few years though and may have been overloaded beyond it's design.
