Barrel turnbuckles

I am rebuilding a 1972 Pearson 33 and 2 years ago replaced the upper rigging and installed a Platismo furling. I used a barrel turnbuckle because the open style would not fit in the furling drum.

Months ago I woke up and thought "I did not put a COTTER PIN in the turnbuckle!" Okay....yes, a nightmare. First, does there need to be a COTTER PIN? Secondly, I don't even know if there is clearance for a COTTER PIN to fit into the furling drum.

What am I missing??

Re: Barrel turnbuckles

if you are talking the closed SS turnbuckles, they are locked by nuts at the top and bottom of the threaded section. There is no way to fit a split pin.
