Life Barrel - Personal Life Raft/Immersion Suit
Came across this while browsing for a life raft. Thoughts?
Looks goofy, has some interesting features though. Collapsed dimensions are 23" x 23" x 33". The size alone is a non-starter for me.

Life Barrel is a new innovation in sea survival. It is safe and secure, there’s no carbon dioxide inflation required, and you never get wet as long as you remain inside the raft. Just lift the lid and secure it in the open position. Climb inside, placing your feet and legs into the sealed pants and boots, pick the raft up and place the straps over your shoulders, then close and secure the lid. Put your arms through the armholes into the attached gloves, walk or run to the nearest exit, then climb or jump into the water and Never Get Wet! It’s easy to carry and easy to wear. Other life rafts require you to climb in from the water, thus you get wet and hypothermia can start, but not with the Life Barrel Raft. No single drop of water on your body during the entire raft deployment process.
Covered in a vinyl case, weighing approximately 23 pounds, Life Barrel brings a new level of comfort to water rescue. Once you have put on Life Barrel Raft and entered the water, read the enclosed instructions to signal for help and then sit back and relax. Life Barrel provides the survivor with confidence in a stressful situation. The body of the raft is designed to protect your body from extreme crashing waves and enables you to survive for longer periods of time unattainable in ordinary immersion suits. Never capsizing, your center of gravity stays below the water line while the compartment that keeps you afloat stays above the water line.
Life Barrel life raft includes:- A large window to view your surroundings
- A Nanotechnology-Based Oxygen Breathing Dome that lets air in but keeps water out
- A water proof retractable light house that can extend above the surface of the lid so the SOS Flashlight signal can be better seen (it also holds extra batteries)
- A hatch within the main lid for sending out flares or bringing in fresh air faster
- A rain catching system with a water bottle to collect the rain to drink
- A heavy duty weather and UV proof vinyl cover for protection when not in use.

Re: Life Barrel - Personal Life Raft/Immersion Suit
This is an old idea - the Victorians came up with the concept first, but the legs were armour plated to fend off sharks....
I don't think it caught on then, either.

Re: Life Barrel - Personal Life Raft/Immersion Suit
Losing heat from the body core is the prime cause of death from hypothermia. The design of this device should mitigate that heat loss by isiolating the core from the water. You still have a lot of the body exposed to the water with the legs and arms outside the box. Put on a couple pairs of long johns, fleece pants and arm warmers and it might be a survival that would allow you to survive in cold water long enough to be rescued. The issue for many cruisers is where are you going to be able to store such a number of these large packages if you are sailing with a crew. Nice idea but idea but doubt it's going to be the next iPhone. As Delancey says, wear your depends before donning.

This has got to be a put-on. I mean, really. Go to the section that talks about barrels in action, and you find this picture:
Send them your money if you want, and prove P.T. Barnum correct. I'm not falling for it!

Re: Life Barrel - Personal Life Raft/Immersion Suit
Hah! Guess the Survival Cube gets no love from CF. Putting aside the rest of the multimedia, I'm pretty sure it's legit. Someone clearly invested in outside help for the user manual: http://www.mylifebarrel.com/LifeBarrel_usermanual.pdf
At any rate, I give the designer credit for an entrepreneurial spirit and creativity. As for the rest, might need some development.
