Re: zeehag on the Move
At this speed, looks like Maz in two days. Though I suspect she'll pick up a bit of speed after she hes a bit more east.

Hang in there Monk, They're probable doing three on and three off watches. Interestingly the area they're approaching has a high consintration of hammerhead sharks.

How far is "lots of space" and "away off"? I am not familiar with these units of distance measurement.
Thanks,
John

It's more about comfort zone than distance. It varies with the individual.

My ignorance has a way of expanding my "comfort zone". I don't want to get this one wrong on the final. Gimmee a hint - 1 mile? 3 miles? 10 miles? 50 miles?

For me as a singlehandler!
1 mile on a leeshore = to damn close!
3 miles ok during the day depending on seas and wind
10 miles ok for nights and to depend on AP
50 miles ok for longer naps

Re: zeehag on the Move
As a base, enough so you are not trapped where there is a situation, and that depends on hazards, coastal, tidal, weather and current conditions.
For a single handler - enough so if you accidently fall asleep that you will not end up in a situation where you are in a "situation". So, you calculate your boat speed * hourssleepdrifting and see what gives.
parallel to coast, i like to stay off 150 miles, especially if there is a current to add to my gain. And stay out of everyones way (especially ships), so I can duck inside easily.
generally experts use their experience as "hedge words". newbies use absolutes. I like cookies and bananas...someone else likes coco puffs.
ANd dont forget the ZOMBIES!!!!

Re: zeehag on the Move
Feral... on that piece of the coast, 20-25 nautical miles off shore is lots of space which will allow time to deal with gear or mechanical failures IMO. As John A notes, it is a 'comfort zone' based on experiencing problems over the years on deliveries on similar lee shores. Little gets your attention more than having a windward shroud fail or engine begin overheating when you are a few (less than 5 miles) off a lee shore. However, it does wonders in helping you focus on the problem... every one is different, I suppose... Capt Phil
