Could explain why he appears to be heading for Launceston.

Maybe they just left Tasmania off the the chart; it's happened before...

Saddam Hussein’s military advisor had a map of Australia on the wall without Tassie. At the time I figured if they got the upper hand in the Gulf War I’d move to tassie because they’d never find me.

Sometime I really wish Tassie wasn't on the Map. Just getting far to busy these days..

Susie is clear of the worst. Sounds like it was pretty unpleasant, but her backtrack kept her clear of the worst of it, and minimised the time in the blow. Very good seamanship.

The worst of the blow will pass well south of Uku.

Igor's forestay has broken at the masthead. He has the gear to fix it onboard, but it won't be much fun.

Mark Slats is due in to the Hobart gate on Sunday. Hopefully I will get out to see him.

Run away!

In this case we can call it a tactical retreat...

It is a very interesting case with the storms rapid deepening over top of Susie. Her response was perfect for this situation. But it does show that slowing down can often be as valid as speeding up, or changing course.

Re: The GGR race, discussion and news

Susie got knocked down after the wind had eased. Seems to be a very common pattern now. Her main hatch was open.

Mark Slats is due in around 0800 Sunday LT.

Re: The GGR race, discussion and news

Loic has sprung a leak and activated his epirb. Approx 30 litres per hour, but not accessible.

I wonder if it is around the engine/probshaft or rudder area. That style of boat can often have awkward access down aft.

Mark Slats is apporaching Hobart. Headed out soon to see him.

He is very approximately 500 miles or so from West Australia. Looks like strong 30-35 knot south westerlies. Sounds like one of the long route vessels is closest. Click image for larger version

According to the GGR facebook site, he lost his rig and got hull damage near the integral water tank from the mast banging on the hull.

Re: The GGR race, discussion and news

So if I have it right, Loic is in a Nicholson 32? Does anybody know about the hull construction of those boats? Solid GRP, but how thick?

Curious because I trying to understand fallen mast damage a bit better.

My only data point for you is when we were dismasted. While the mast is bearing along the hull, the wave action makes it move up and down relative to the hull. From inside the boat it sounds like it is trying to saw a hole in the boat. In our case, we were close enough to land to motor to it, so there was no question of trying to save the mast. It did not take long to let it go. Ours was supported by both the stays'l sheet and the main sheet, so we undid the rigging, then cut the lines, and gravity did the rest of the job. In the time it took us to do that, certainly less than an hour, probably more like 1/2 hour to make the decision and execute it all, the mast had sawed through the gelcoat, but had not got into the fiberglass. Oh, yes, the wave height was under 2 m. and diminishing. The sawing would be worse in taller waves. It is how they cut up the cement ship that sunk at the dock in Fiji, used a chain, and moisture and back and forth like a backpacking saw, an efficient way to cut up stuff--and you don't want it done to your support platform.

A fascinating account of cutting a sunken ship into multiple sections by pulling cable underneath.

Possibly damage to the hull around the keel tanks. A SAR plane is on its way.

Just seen Mark Slats. Very nice guy and he was very friendly.
